Like so many Santa Cruz County residents, I await the dropping of the COVID-19 shoe on whether our county will join other Bay Area counties in a more restrictive shelter in place order. You can read the latest COVID-19 update report in the eNews. For now, I have decided it is time to think about merry and family-friendly events of the year — our holiday season. The Chamber’s partner organization, Visit Santa Cruz County, is a master of providing information about what to do and where to go in Santa Cruz County. Even in a Pandemic Pivot COVID — 19 world, they continue to share the unique value of what Santa Cruz County is all about. You can look at their events page here: https://www.santacruz.org/events/ These events are framed around meeting the County Public Health Officer’s COVID — 19 guidelines and adhering to the latest Governor’s pandemic order. While we have some time, at least as of this writing, before a potential more restrictive Shelter in Place order takes place, outdoor activities will be limited, but accessible. I want to share a few family-friendly opportunities to enjoy the holidays safely, mask on, and practicing social distancing. So go out for a walk on the beach, ride your bike, take a hike in one of our county and state parks. But please stay with your small group and avoid large gatherings. While you are thinking of the holidays, I want to remind you that our local businesses, retail stores, and restaurants need you. The regional economic engines of Santa Cruz County - all of the Chambers in the county for the Pajaro Valley to the San Lorenzo Valley, the Capitola Village, Visit Santa Cruz, the Santa Cruz Downtown Association, Small Business Development Center, Think Local First, Boulder Creek Business Association, Santa Cruz County Business Council and Santa Cruz Works have collaborated on Shop Santa Cruz County. It is a one-stop on-line portal —rideoutthewave.org — where it is free for businesses to register with the ability to take orders on-line with a credit purchase for gift cards. As we close out 2020, let’s be proactive in beating back the pandemic, staying safe, wearing your mask, and most importantly, supporting our local businesses and each other.
