Albert Einstein’s name is synonymous with genius and creativity. He was named Person of the Century by TIME in 1999. Einstein is a rare icon, whose wisdom extended far beyond the realm of science to reveal a man with an almost childlike sense of wonder and a profound love of humanity. One of his famous quotes captures the value of what leaders can become: “All that is valuable in human society depends upon the opportunity for development accorded the individual.” We are told that the idle mind closes the door to success while an open mind to new ideas can generate a thought process beyond your imagination. The Chamber's Leadership Forum is designed to be your opportunity for growth and understanding in a changing world. In December 2017, the Santa Cruz Area Chamber launched a new series entitled Leadership in a Changing World. Leaders lead for different reasons; utilizing her/his burning passion for building programs, projects and services to and for our community; using innovative ideas to create new companies and inspiring workers to think boldly. Now, more than ever, we need to build bridges through an interactive conversation between the business, community, public and non-profit community. When we talk about leaders in our community, we focus on those individuals who stand above the crowd for their effectiveness in public, private and non-profit positions. Singularly, each leader has a special story to tell. Their stories will make you laugh, think and cry. Join us for the final installment of this inspiring series on September 21. We have a very special line-up of speakers who will share their diversity of experiences and provide some illuminating stories in the fourth forum in the year-long series. Our two keynote speakers, Rene Schlaepfer, Lead Pastor of Twin Lakes Church and Heidi Boynton, Executive Director, Co-Founder Mini Mermaid Running Club will bring a smile to your face, laughter to your heart and inspire your thought process. If you haven’t heard either of them speak, you are in for real treat. Our panelists will showcase their board and diverse career experiences. Jess Brown, Executive Director of the San Mateo/Santa Cruz/ Santa Clara Counties Farm Bureaus and the Educational Organization, Agriculture has an amazing story to share about his local, regional and world experiences. Amy Hiett, Founder of The Table Group is a firm dedicated to helping leaders and managers make their organizations healthier and the world of work more fulfilling. What an opportunity to listen and learn from Amy as she tells stories about her 20 years teaching others. Dan Haifley, Executive Director of O'Neill Sea Odyssey — I know first-hand by working with Dan back in the late 1980s and early 1990s that there is not one person in the Santa Cruz region more dedicated to promoting and protecting our ocean, and where he spearheaded the creation of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary as Co-Chair of the Environmental Working Group. Rounding out our panel is Gail L. Pellerin, Santa Cruz County Clerk/Registrar of Voters. To the voting public, Gail is recognized around the state as a top-notch election official, known for her dedication to protecting every vote and the election process. She is also a creative person and a community leader in so many ways. With the changing world we have before us today, the yearning for leadership is at an all-time high. There is a void in the soundbites that are echoing throughout social media circles, on Facebook pages and Twitter postings. As you read this eNews article ask yourself who is your mentor, and where do you find your inner strength to be a better community member? Come listen, learn, and understand the vision of these community leaders. What better way to spend a Friday morning than networking with colleagues and meeting new friends?
