United Way Offers “Building Futures” Training

United Way Announces Employer Training
Practices & Resources in Affirmative Hiring of Individuals with a
Criminal Record

Santa Cruz --Acknowledging the county-wide negative consequences of excluding qualified applicants from the workforce due to a criminal record, United Way has announced “Building Futures”, a free training session for business owners and HR professionals. The two-hour session will present practices and resources businesses can use to hire qualified individuals who have a criminal record while avoiding negligent hiring practices.

Currently, more than 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. has an arrest or conviction on their record. But most people have a criminal record for minor offenses or for incidents from decades ago. When qualified applicants are excluded from the workforce, families and communities are adversely affected. Employment is inextricably linked to the economic health and overall prosperity of our county.

Research shows that the loss of production of people with criminal records costs the U.S. between $57-65 billion annually, and incarceration decreases income by 40%, impacting hundreds of local families. However, there are solutions that can not only help decrease this impact, but increase the bottom line of our local businesses.

The two-hour training session will include presentations and practical tools from renowned employment law attorneys, public safety professionals and local employers with successful business models for hiring people with criminal records.

Participants will:

  • Learn to manage the risks and liabilities associated with hiring applicants with criminal records
  • Understand the laws prohibiting blanket exclusions of applicants with any form of criminal history
  • Receive information about local resources to help grow your business and your bottom line through hiring subsidies and incentives
  • Hear stories of local employers and employees with success in hiring "re-entry" applicants with records
