Are we ready for the new school year to start come this fall? With so many pensive moments during the last year about the safety of in-person learning, hybrid teaching, facility-level COVID guidelines and teacher and student safety there are many unknowns that are being slowly worked out.

The Santa Cruz County Chamber will host an education forum on Wednesday, July 28 via Zoom to discuss the latest plans for K-12 schools, community colleges, and the UC and state universities on the Central Coast.

The State has formally launched a new Safe Schools for All Hub (https://schools.covid19.ca.gov), a one-stop shop for state guidance and resources on safely resuming in-person instruction. The Hub provides the most updated guidance for all schools to follow, directives for reporting data, and links to additional resources, including how to implement school-centered testing.

Please join us as we hear from our education leaders in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties to get a firsthand look at what’s in store for the school year. The panel of educators will include:

Cynthia Larive, Chancellor of University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC)

Eduardo Ochoa, PhD, President of California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB)

Matthew Wetstein, Cabrillo College

Faris Sabbah, Superintendent of Santa Cruz County Education

Kris Munro, Santa Cruz City Schools

Cynthia Larive, Chancellor of University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC)

As the 11th chancellor of the University of California at Santa Cruz, Cynthia K. Larive leads an institution known throughout the world for its interdisciplinary approach to research for the public good, and for its commitment to social and environmental justice. Since its founding fewer than 60 years ago, UC Santa Cruz has been on an unprecedented trajectory, with its faculty advancing world-changing research and establishing its reputation as one of the most innovative, collaborative, impactful institutions in higher education. It is a place where ideas are converted into action, and action into real, transformative change.

A common thread throughout Larive’s career has been her commitment to student success, inclusion and equity. She has led programs for undergraduate research and curricular innovation and has written extensively on active and experiential learning and mentoring. She has personally mentored 30 doctoral and master’s students, and she has been active in encouraging the participation and success of women and other underrepresented groups in the STEM fields.

Upon her arrival in Santa Cruz in 2019, she immediately prioritized improving graduation rates and eliminating graduation gaps for low-income and first-generation students, and for students from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education. She elevated the role of the campus chief diversity officer, and restructured the Office of Student Affairs and Success to align with her goals.

An accomplished bioanalytical chemist, Larive came to UC Santa Cruz from UC Riverside, where she was provost and executive vice chancellor. As provost, she was responsible for the academic enterprise, managing large-scale initiatives as well as the daily operations of the Riverside campus. Over her career at UCR, she served in a variety of other leadership roles including Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, Divisional Dean of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, and interim Dean of the College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences.

Larive is a first-generation college graduate, earning her bachelor’s of science from South Dakota State University and her master’s from Purdue University, both in chemistry. She earned her Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from UC Riverside while raising daughters Erin and Megan with husband Jim.

Eduardo Ochoa, PhD, President of California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB)

Eduardo M. Ochoa grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, before moving to Portland, Ore., with his family while in high school. He has earned degrees in physics, nuclear science and economics from Reed College, Columbia University and the New School for Social Research, respectively. He has worked as an engineer, as a faculty member and academic administrator, and as assistant secretary for postsecondary education in the Obama Administration.

In 2012, he brought that wide range of academic, professional and personal experience to the position of president of California State University, Monterey Bay.

Since arriving on campus in July 2012, Dr. Ochoa has moved decisively to deal with the challenges facing Cal State Monterey Bay. His emphasis on inclusion and outreach meshes with both the vision statement of the campus and the realities of serving a student body made up of a majority of first-generation students. He has re-focused attention on raising the university’s retention and graduation rates, while stressing the importance of a rigorous educational experience. He led the effort to create a College of Business and to move the new college toward national accreditation.

Dr. Ochoa has established three broad goals for his presidency: establishing excellence in selected fields in response to regional needs; becoming a national leader in the development of new sustainable models of higher education; and developing the university’s catalytic role in regional, cultural and economic development.

Matthew Wetstein, Cabrillo College

Dr. Matt Wetstein is in his third year as Superintendent/President of Cabrillo College. Prior to working at Cabrillo, Matt served for 6 years as the Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Instruction and Planning at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, CA. Matt started his career in the California Community Colleges as a Political Science Instructor at San Joaquin Delta College in 1996. He holds a BA from the University of St. Francis in Illinois, and a Masters and Ph.D. in Political Science from Northern Illinois University. He is a statewide leader in the Research and Planning Community for California Community Colleges, having spent six years on the board of that organization and two years as President.

Faris Sabbah, Superintendent of Santa Cruz County Education

Over the past 25 years, Dr. Faris Sabbah has served as county deputy superintendent, county assistant superintendent, university professor, director, assistant principal, teacher, and instructional aide. He obtained his bachelor’s in Psychology from UC Santa Cruz, his masters in Educational Leadership from San Jose State University, and his doctorate in Leadership for Educational Equity from UC Berkeley.

He carries a deep sense of urgency to disrupt inequitable practices. He is committed to partnering with districts and other organizations to create a network of support that propels our students to achieve and thrive.

Dr. Sabbah is committed to the values of diversity, equity and inclusion as he helps lead the evolution of the County Office of Education in addressing the needs of students, districts, and the community. His top priorities are to support students and districts by expanding the COE presence throughout the county, engage the community through an ambitious communication plan, develop a data-driven culture of improvement, create safe spaces for all students, and build programs and opportunities that uplift the voices of students.

Kris Munro, Santa Cruz City Schools

Kris Munro is beginning her eighth year as Superintendent for Santa Cruz City Schools. With 29 years in education, Kris began her career as a high school English and English Language Development teacher and has served in various leadership positions including Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services, Principal, and Assistant Principal. Kris brings a deep commitment to equity and the success of every child by providing students a world-class education. During her tenure as Superintendent, Santa Cruz City Schools has increased the percentage of Low Income students eligible for four-year universities by 20% with an overall increase in college preparedness of 17%. In addition, the district has secured sustainable local funding for both educational programs and infrastructure by passing four parcel taxes and two bond measures to ensure needed resources for public education in Santa Cruz. Currently, the district is focused on supporting student academic and social emotional needs post pandemic and furthering efforts to build employee housing to help recruit and retain the best possible team for our TK-12 public schools.
