The beloved and beleaguered icon of Aptos hits the century mark! Revisit the last 100 years through the eyes — portholes, if you prefer — of the S.S. Palo Alto with music, dancing, children’s activities, arts and crafts, food (sold by Taquitos Gabriel’s) and the unveiling of a commemorative historic plaque. Event is free; parking is $10. June Topic: Status and Privilege We joke about “keeping up with the Joneses” — but there’s real competition in our society for status and the accompanying privilege. How do we decide what we most value and how do we assign status to what we value? While our country seems to value wealth, there are other forms of status and privilege. What privilege do each of us enjoy? And how does that correspond with our status? This conversation examines our own status and the ways we experience our status in everyday life. From education to wealth, to gender to race, let’s talk about what we have...and what we desire. Space is limited. Registration is required. June is San Lorenzo River Month! To celebrate our river and the Riverwalk, the Coastal Watershed Council is partnering with Eco Goods to co-host a very special June River Health Day on Saturday, June 8. We will be removing invasive grasses and applying mulch around native plants at the Chinatown Bridge Parklet along the banks of the San Lorenzo River. Our overall goals are to ensure native plants have the space they need to thrive and to help beautify the Santa Cruz Riverwalk. This event is open to the public and to all ages so bring your friends and family! Eco Goods is generously offering a 10% in-store discount to all volunteers. Each volunteer will also be entered in a raffle for the chance to win other prizes. Thank you Eco Goods for this additional support! This event will take place on the west bank of the San Lorenzo River at the Chinatown Bridge (pedestrian bridge crossing from San Lorenzo Park). We recommend that all volunteers dress in comfortable gardening clothes, including long pants, socks and sturdy shoes. Bring sun protection and a reusable water bottle. Gloves, tools and light refreshments provided. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

PopUp Picnics in the Park return to Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park for the fourth summer in a row, taking place Thursdays from June 13 through August 15 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. (except for July 4). Take a break to enjoy tacos on the terrazza, with food by Taquitos Gabriel available for purchase. The full menu includes tacos, plates, burritos, quesadillas and drinks with occasional specials, such as mole. Prices range from $2 to $10, and Taquitos Gabriel will donate a portion of their proceeds back to Friends of Santa Cruz State Park. Join us for Homeless Services Center Business After Hours!

Please join us for an informative and fun Business After Hours at Homeless Services Center's Coral Street campus at 115 Coral Street in Santa Cruz. Attendees will have the opportunity to take a guided tour of the campus, and learn about what HSC is doing to end homelessness in our community. The event will kick off with refreshments in the Community Room. The tour will be followed by a drawing for all those who participate in Tour Trivia — answering five questions about our services. Parking is available on campus, with overflow parking is available at the Tannery.

Mission: Homeless Services Center partners with individuals and families to create pathways out of their homelessness into permanent housing.
Vision: Homeless Services Center holds firmly to a vision that homelessness in Santa Cruz County should be rare, brief, and non-recurring

Mayor Martine Watkins, Santa Cruz

After obtaining both her B.A. in Legal Studies from UCSC and attending CSUMB/ Leon and Sylvia Panetta Institute for her Master’s degree in Public Policy, Martine has come to recognize the value and role public policy has in influencing social and environmental impacts. She values collaboration, strategic planning, policy analysis, accountability, and data-driven decision-making.

Martine is committed to improving the quality of life for the community she grew up in. As a parent of two young girls, she recognize that the choices we make today impact the future for those who will inherit our beautiful city. A healthy community is a thriving community.

Mayor Jacques Bertrand, Capitola

Jacques is a 20-year Capitola resident, and had been married 34 years. He worked in R&D for semiconductor industry, with an M.S. in Physics. He obtained a Master's in Public Policy to better serve his community.

Mayor Francisco Estrada, Watsonville

As a native son of Watsonville, Francisco has been witness to Watsonville's progress and growth towards making our city a truly remarkable place to live, work and play. Although we have come a long way, there is still more we can do together, for each other, and for our community. Franciscos will work to provide the youth of Watsonville with more opportunities to thrive and develop into future leaders. He alsois workign to promote a democratic process that is more inclusive and reflective of the diversity that invigorates our city. Finally, together as a community, he wants to craft and support policies that will allow all residents and families to prosper.

Mayor Jack Dilles, Scotts Valley

Jack loves our city of Scotts Valley and wants to see it prosper. His platform is one of Strategic Planning, Open Communication, and Responsible Stewardship. He wants to move forward in a way that serves all of us, with a shared vision and collaborative leadership. In his work, family, community, he has endeavored to act respectfully and ethically. He wants to work together to create a vibrant community and a common vision. Scotts Valley will face pressure to grow in the coming years. It is important that we face these challenges together with an idea of where we are going. Unplanned growth has unintended consequences.
