In celebration of our participation in Santa Cruz Gives, we will be hosting Bedtime Stories for Shelter Pets EVERY Saturday through December 28th! Read the Shelter pets a bedtime story at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter! Wear your pajamas, bring your favorite book, and come to the Shelter to relax with the pets. Sit outside the kennels with the adoptable dogs, cats, or rabbits and tuck them in for the night! *There is space for about 30 people/children to sit at kennels and read. People may need to take turns and this program will be first come first served based on the short time frame and limited space! You may arrive at 5:30pm to get checked in and get a spot! Feel free to bring a blanket or pillow to sit on!*

Emma Arnold is America's fiercest sweetheart. Equal parts outrageous and thoughtful, her standup comedy is engaging, honest, and comes from the heart. We had her at The Lab in the very beginning and everyone had such a great time we couldn't help but get her back to Santa Cruz! In addition to being a successful touring comedian, Emma is the co-founder and artistic director of the 208 Comedyfest, the codirector of Comedyfort (part of the Treefort Festival), as well as a mother of three and third-generation beekeeper. She was named Jackie and Laurie's "Comic of the Week" in 2018 and needs literally nothing else from life after that. Her self-released comedy special, "Yes, Please", is available here and you should watch it, it's fun. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, families need new ways to connect. Join us to explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease. The Effective Communication Strategies program of the Alzheimer’s Association was designed to provide practical information and resources to help dementia caregivers learn to decode verbal and behavioral messages from people with dementia.

Join the Coastal Watershed Council in revitalizing the San Lorenzo River! During our December River Health Day, you can help plant native seedlings along the banks of the San Lorenzo River to increase biodiversity and habitat complexity. We will meet on the east bank of the river between the Soquel Ave. and Laurel St. bridges. Look for the blue CWC table. Parking is available at 107 Dakota Ave. or across the river in downtown Santa Cruz. RSVP to get more detailed parking instructions in advance of the event. Gloves, tools and light refreshments provided. We recommend that all volunteers dress in comfortable gardening clothes, include long pants, socks and sturdy closed-toe shoes. Bring layers, sun protection and a reusable water bottle. All ages and abilities welcome. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
