Come celebrate with Cruzio! We’re having our annual open house the night after Halloween, and you’re invited! We’ll have all the usual, like awesome food trucks, craft beer provided by Santa Cruz Mountain Brewery, music (more on that in a little), and beautiful art. Free admission, free booze, all conveniently on First Friday November and at our downtown headquarters. This year is especially important to us here at Cruzio, because we’ve officially been in business for a mind-blowing 30 years! We are very excited to commemorate that with all of our customers, city leaders, friends, neighbors, and more, and hope you can make it.

Join the Coastal Watershed Council in revitalizing the San Lorenzo River! During our November River Health Day, you can help plant native seedlings along the banks of the San Lorenzo River to increase biodiversity and habitat complexity. We will meet on the east bank of the river between the Soquel Ave. and Laurel St. bridges. Look for the blue CWC table. Parking is available at 107 Dakota Ave. or across the river in downtown Santa Cruz. RSVP to get more detailed parking instructions in advance of the event. Gloves, tools and light refreshments provided. We recommend that all volunteers dress in comfortable gardening clothes, include long pants, socks and sturdy closed-toe shoes. Bring layers, sun protection and a reusable water bottle. All ages and abilities welcome. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. This event is for all ages and all experience levels. The Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony, under the direction of Nathaniel Berman, performs music by Malcolm Arnold, Aaron Copland, and Arturo Márquez, plus "Poem for Flute and Orchestra," by Charles T. Griffes, featuring this year's Concerto Competition winner, 16-year-old Hunter Bauman (pictured). Also included: the world premiere of "Reflections of a 16-Year-Old Girl," by Bay Area teen composer Miranda Yu. A delightful way to spend a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon! Children will be inspired to see other kids their age performing at such a high level. Adults will be amazed by the depth and beauty of the performance. Homemade cookies and cakes for sale at intermission. FREE admission for students 18 and younger. Adults $15, Seniors $10, Students 19–24 $5. Tickets available online and at the door.

More about our speaker

Lenny Mendonca
Lenny Mendonca is the Chief Economic and Business Advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom and Director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). He is a Senior Partner Emeritus of McKinsey & Company and a Lecturer on Inequality at the Stanford Business School.

He founded McKinsey’s U.S. state and local public sector consulting practice. He also oversaw their knowledge development, Chairing the McKinsey Global Institute and the Firm's communications, including the McKinsey Quarterly. He served for a decade on the McKinsey Shareholder Council (its Board of Directors). He retired in from McKinsey in 2014.

He received his MBA and certificate in public management from Stanford. He holds an AB, magna cum laude, in economics from Harvard.

He lives on the Half Moon Bay coast with his wife, Christine. They raised their two daughters, Allie and Rebecca, there and are the founders and owners of the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, The Inn at Mavericks and the Pacific Standard Taproom. He is also Chair and primary owner of the Coastside News Group (Half Moon Bay Review).

Family Volunteer Day is a global day of service that celebrates the power of families who work together to support their communities and neighborhoods. In celebration of our participation in Santa Cruz Gives, we will be hosting Bedtime Stories for Shelter Pets EVERY Saturday through December 28th! Read the Shelter pets a bedtime story at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter! Wear your pajamas, bring your favorite book, and come to the Shelter to relax with the pets. Sit outside the kennels with the adoptable dogs, cats, or rabbits and tuck them in for the night! *There is space for about 30 people/children to sit at kennels and read. People may need to take turns and this program will be first come first served based on the short time frame and limited space! You may arrive at 5:30pm to get checked in and get a spot! Feel free to bring a blanket or pillow to sit on!*
