Santa Cruz Public Libraries has partnered with the SC County Elections Department again this year to promote and make voter registration cards available in print and online registration at all library branches. Since 2012, over 1.4 million people have registered to vote or update their registration as part of National Voter Registration Day, celebrated annually on the 4th Tuesday in September. National Voter Registration Day is endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) and the National Association of State Election Directors.

Our home, Santa Cruz County and its cities, is at a tipping point where public policy decisions regarding a sustainable future from public land-use policy and key infrastructure development to private-sector land-use strategies and investments – will shape our region’s future for decades to come. We invite you to join us, a cross-section of public and private leaders engaged in making these decisions, for a 2 1/2 day immersion in these issues and a broad-ranging conversation about our future.

As business leaders we are asked to lead on these issues in partnership with our public sector. On September 5-6-7 we will embark on a visit to beautiful Lake Tahoe to learn how that region is working in collaboration to produce lasting effects to preserve the clarity of the Lake, address infrastructure deficiencies and inspire a new generation of leaders to ensure a sustainable future for the Lake Tahoe Basin. The similarities between Santa Cruz and Lake Tahoe are striking. Santa Cruz has its beaches and the Monterey Bay, the Santa Cruz redwoods and the scenic vistas where the mountain meets the Ocean - Lake Tahoe, too, is surrounded by the majestic Sierra Nevada National Forest and scenic vistas where mountains meet the lake. Anyone who has visited Lake Tahoe knows that as you drop into the Tahoe Basin the “Jewel of the Sierras” appears below. Mark Twain called Lake Tahoe the ‘fairest picture the whole world affords.’

The Community Leadership Visit (CLV) will include approximately 80 local leaders from throughout the County. We will visit the Lake Tahoe Basin, the four counties on both the California and Nevada side of the lake, talk with national, regional and local planning experts, and tour cutting-edge projects, seeing how innovation and technology advancements are used as tools to protect Lake Tahoe. Topics will include an overview of housing demand/supply, and the economics of infrastructure development; how Lake Tahoe leaders have successfully addressed social, political, and legal constraints; creative design through thoughtful sustainable strategies; collaborative projects integrating transportation, environmental improvement projects with commercial development; and stories about how different communities in Lake Tahoe Basin have transformed their political narrative about the balance the environment and the economic vitality of the Basin.

Roundtrip motor coach tour, two night hotel accommodations and all meals during the CLV trip. All incidential expenses are the responsibility of each participant.

The Coastal Watershed Council invites you to make a difference in the lower San Lorenzo River ecosystem by volunteering with Coastal Watershed Council's River Health Day. Volunteer and remove invasive ice plant growing along the banks of the San Lorenzo River. Ice plant takes over the riverbank, stops other plants from growing and as a result limits biodiversity in the river ecosystem. You can stop the spread of ice plant and create space for helpful river plants to grow. We recommend that all volunteers dress in comfortable gardening clothes, include long pants, socks and sturdy shoes. Bring sun protection and a reusable water bottle. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Parking is available on Front Street.

Rene Schlaepfer, Lead Pastor of Twin Lakes Church
Rene is the lead pastor of Twin Lakes Church in Aptos, California (www.tlc.org). He is the author of seven books and speaks at dozens of camps and conferences around the globe every year. He lives in the beautiful beach town of Santa Cruz with his wife Laurie. Born in San Jose, California to Swiss immigrant parents, Rene grew up with dual citizenship and briefly lived in Switzerland before settling on the West Coast. There he worked for many years in broadcasting, primarily as an air personality on contemporary music radio stations. While in broadcasting, Rene earned a BA in Radio/TV/Film from San Jose State and an MA Theology from Western Seminary. Since then, he has served as a pastor in San Diego, South Lake Tahoe, and Santa Cruz. Rene and Laurie have a family they adore: Jonathan (Kelli), Elisabeth (Jordan), David and one practically-perfect grandson. Beside their love of church ministry, Rene and Laurie also advocate together for their favorite causes: local food banks and an orphanage in India

Heidi Boynton, Executive Director, Co-Founder Mini Mermaid Running Club

Heidi is a mother, wife, coach, athlete, community advocate, adventure seeker with the life purpose of empowering others to live out their potential regardless of their physical, financial or social background. Heidi is a proud voice of the everyday woman, helping to dispel the images the world has set out for us encouraging EVERY woman to give life a chance, to shatter their own boundaries and have a great time along the way. She has completed over 50 triathlons, multiple marathons, biked the french alps, completed 2 Ironman triathlons and has coached hundreds of women through clinics and one on one coaching. Heidi is Executive Director/Co-Founder of Mini Mermaid Running Club and Co-Founder/Co-Director of Finding Sophia.

Soon after her youngest son went to Middle School, Heidi determined to start writing the next chapter in her life book. Having successfully opened a women’s only gym as manager, she soon discovered her love of helping women see how capable they are, combing movement goals with personal goals; she led women on a journey to reclaim their hearts, minds, and bodies. Heidi created Team Mermaid in 2008 - an outdoor women's fitness training team which quickly began building teams of up to 35 women in Silicon Valley and Santa Cruz County. Not long after, Mini Mermaid Running Club was born after Heidi, and MMRC Co-Founder Megan Tresham noticed a lack of fitness clubs for low-income girls in Santa Cruz County. Since its inception in 2009, over 15,000 girls and boys all across the world have also found the joy of crossing a finish line while getting to build their heart, mind, and body strength. While also running Mini Mermaids as Executive Director, Heidi announces at local races, hosts training runs, and an online forum for women called I Am More to encourage women from all walks of life to recognize they are more than anyone sees, as well as leads bi-annual women's house building trips to Mexico for Finding Sophia. Heidi's biggest cheerleader is her husband of 27 years, Mark Boynton. They love adventuring together and watching their two boys Jake and Sam find and cross their own finish lines in life.

Jess Brown, Executive Director of the San Mateo/Santa Cruz/ Santa Clara Counties Farm Bureaus and the Educational Organization, Agri-Culture.
Jess’ involvement in the community includes board member of Leadership Santa Cruz County. He is Past-Chair of the Tannery Arts Center and Goodwill Central Coast and past-president of the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County, Monterey Museum of Art and Cabrillo College Foundation. Jess was a founder of Ag Against Hunger that has distributed, since its inception in 1990, 275 million pounds of donated local produce to people in need. Jess is a graduate of three state and national leadership programs which allowed him to study in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Germany and Denmark. Jess has volunteered five times to teach organizational skills to re-settled farmers in Zimbabwe. He has also taught financial skills to agro-dealers in Mozambique.

Amy Hiett, Founder of The Table Group
Amy Hiett is a founder and the general manager of The Table Group, a firm dedicated to helping leaders and managers make their organizations healthier and the world of work more fulfilling. The Table Group has been in business for over 20 years and Amy has a variety of responsibilities including priority management, staff development, strategic partnerships and events.

Prior to founding the firm in 1997, Amy worked as a congressional aide in Washington, D.C. and in high-tech communications for a software company. She studied political science at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and lives in Moraga, California with her husband and two children.

Dan Haifley, Executive Director of O'Neill Sea Odyssey
Dan Haifley is an American environmentalist and newspaper columnist. Since 1999, he has been Executive Director of O'Neill Sea Odyssey, a non-profit organization offering a free oceanography and ecology program for school-aged youth sailing Monterey Bay – a bay of the Pacific Ocean, along the central coast of California.

From 1986 to 1993, Haifley was Executive Director of Save Our Shores, based in Santa Cruz, California, where he spearheaded the creation of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary as Co-Chair of the Environmental Working Group.^[He also led the effort against offshore oil drilling, including passage of twenty-six local ordinances in California counties and cities limiting development of onshore facilities for offshore drilling, and their defense against a lawsuit by the oil industry as represented by the Western Oil and Gas Association.Haifley writes the column "Our Ocean Backyard" for the Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper.

In August 2011, he was given the Ocean Hero award by Save Our Shores.According to the book Jack O'Neill: It's Always Summer on the Inside (2011) by Drew Kampion, Haifley – as the program's executive director – has argued the program's position that ocean concepts should be adopted in formal education standards and made more widely available to youth from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Gail L. Pellerin, Santa Cruz County Clerk/Registrar of Voters
In this position Gail Pellerin manages all elections conducted in the county and serves as the Commissioner of Civil Marriage. Her office is responsible for voter registration, conducting elections, managing candidate and campaign filings, issuing marriage licenses and conducting ceremonies, maintaining fictitious business name filings, and serving as a passport acceptance facility. Gail has 31 years of experience in public service – 7 years working for the State Legislature in Sacramento and 25 years serving as the primary elections official in Santa Cruz County. In June 2018, she was elected to her 4^th term as County Clerk. Gail served as President of the California Association of Clerks and Election Officials from 2010 to 2012 and is currently Co-Chair of the Secretary of State’s Voting Accessibility Advisory Committee. She is the author of several election guidebooks to assist voters in navigating through various election procedures including Initiatives, Recalls, and Referendums
