Author Talk with Dana Mackenzie, local author and co-author of The Book of Why: The New Science of Cause and Effect About The Book of Why: For thirty years, co-author, Judea Pearl, has been working to restore the lost language of causation to science. All statistics students, and most scientists, have heard the adage: “Correlation is not causation.” While there is nothing wrong with this mantra on the surface, it has been used to justify a virtual taboo against speaking about causation. Pearl’s work has shattered this taboo and placed the study of cause and effect on a firm scientific basis. It enables us to answer—or at least to discuss!—important questions like “Does smoking cause cancer?” or “Was this heat wave caused by global warming?” The Book of Why will replace “Of course we can’t answer that question” with “Of course we can!”

Panelists

Keisha Frost – CEO, United Way of Santa Cruz County. Keisha joined United Way of Santa Cruz County in 2012 as the Director of Community Giving & Marketing and was appointed to CEO in January 2018. A graduate of Leadership Santa Cruz, Keisha holds a bachelors degree from the University of Washington and a graduate of the prestigious United Way Worldwide Advanced Leadership Program.

Keisha started her career in nonprofits as an executive leader in resource development, program design, and product sales with several Girl Scout Councils throughout the nation. She then joined a design team with Mayor David Ciciline (currently Congressman) in Providence, Rhode Island that created the nation’s first citywide system for after school programs, the Providence After School Alliance/AfterZone. Prior to joining United Way of Santa Cruz County, she was the Director of Resource Development with United Way in Charleston, South Carolina, leading a team securing $11M in community support, allocating those funds to over 100 partner agencies.

Locally, Keisha has serves on several boards including Your Future Is Our Business, Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast, Monarch Services, and Dignity Health Dominican Hospital Community Advisors. She has earned numerous awards such as the 2017 NEXTIES Mentor of the Year – Santa Cruz County and the ATHENA Awards - McLean County (Illinois) Chamber of Commerce. In her tenure with United Way she established the Emerging Leaders Circle for young professionals dedicated to addressing community needs in Santa Cruz County, and she has grown Women In Philanthropy - leaders dedicated to children’s school success through enrichment activities. She has developed one of the most advanced digital giving and donor engagement platforms in the United Way movement.

On a personal note, Keisha and her husband Charles, an audio engineer, have three children, twins Charles III and Braelyn and baby Brightlyn. Keisha also has two teenage sons, Kaleb and Joshua, who live during the school year in Charleston, South Carolina and actively participate in Summer Camp at the Boys & Girls Club Downtown Santa Cruz.

Lisa Larrabee – CEO, Harris & Associates. Harris & Associates is a western U.S. professional services firm helping public and private clients with all aspects of their infrastructure and development needs. Lisa has held this position since October of 2010. Lisa’s primary responsibilities include leading the BOD of Directors, establishing the company’s mission, vision and values, leadership development, and key account management. Prior to joining Harris, Ms. Larrabee spent 21 years at a multidisciplinary consulting firm, including eight years as vice president and chief operating officer. Following that company’s acquisition by a global professional services firm in 2008, she served as senior vice president and division leader. She has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Geography, with a focus on geomorphology.

Jacob Martinez - Executive Director/Founder of Digital NEST. Digital NEST is a non-profit, high-tech training and collaboration space for young people in Watsonville and Salinas. Prior to establishing the Digital NEST in 2014, Jacob Martinez spent ten years leading innovative computer-based programs in California, with a particular focus on encouraging Latina girls to enter high tech fields. He is a frequent speaker at technology and educational conferences, and has been honored by business, community, and educational institutions for his innovation and leadership. He spoke in 2015 at the first White House Tech Meetup and was named by Tech Crunch as one of 2014’s Top 10 Men in the Country Supporting Women in Technology. In 2015, Jacob was named the Santa Cruz County Entrepreneur of the Year. Jacob holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of California at Santa Cruz, and a Masters degree in Instructional Science and Technology from California State University, Monterey Bay.

Jennifer Mayfield - Director of Media Relations and Public Affairs at Nextdoor. Jenny Mayfield is the Director of Media Relations and Public Affairs at Nextdoor, one of Silicon Valley's fastest growing startups. In this role, Mayfield is charged with elevating and positioning the company's brand as well as developing meaningful national partnerships. Prior to joining Nextdoor, Mayfield was the Director of
Media Relations at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

Mayfield started her career in the White House as a Special Assistant to the Vice President's Chief of Staff and, later, a Press Secretary to the Vice President. Mayfield and her husband live in San Francisco, CA with their three young children.

The Team intends to get to know the residents in our neighborhood better and to share safety tips. Three pigs set out to seek their fortunes with a bit of house building. Things don't go as planned in this creative retelling of the traditional story; houses collapse, pigs and wolves play together and audience members help the story along with lots of live music, singing, construction and laughter. Presented with traditional Bohemian style marionettes on a tabletop stage. This show runs about 40 minutes and is recommended for ages 3 and up.

Magical Moonshine's newest addition to the Canterbury Collection is Chaucer's Canterbury tale about a rooster who is caught by the flattering fox...but foxes can be fooled as well. Assisting the beloved Chanticleer is a wise ant, as well as the pig, sheep, goat, dog, hen and farmer. Medieval costumes and live, ancient music (including a version of "Old MacDonald Had A Farm" from 1710!) make for a delightful and interactive family program. This production is inspired by the Kelmscott Chaucer from the McCune Art and Rare Book Collection, who are sponsors of the project.

The Age Well, Drive Smart Program is designed to provide mature drivers with the keys to driving safer and driving longer. Topics will include: How to tune up driving skills, refreshing knowledge of the rules of the road, learning about normal, age related physical changes and how to adjust them, when it may be time to limit or stop driving.
