Author Talk with Dana Mackenzie, local author and co-author of The Book of Why: The New Science of Cause and Effect About The Book of Why: For thirty years, co-author, Judea Pearl, has been working to restore the lost language of causation to science. All statistics students, and most scientists, have heard the adage: “Correlation is not causation.” While there is nothing wrong with this mantra on the surface, it has been used to justify a virtual taboo against speaking about causation. Pearl’s work has shattered this taboo and placed the study of cause and effect on a firm scientific basis. It enables us to answer—or at least to discuss!—important questions like “Does smoking cause cancer?” or “Was this heat wave caused by global warming?” The Book of Why will replace “Of course we can’t answer that question” with “Of course we can!”

In a library very nearby, young people will dodge Stormtroopers and Mandalorian bounty hunters as they explore the STEAM programming offered throughout the Santa Cruz Public Libraries. Members of the 501st Legion: Golden Gate Garrison will be attendance, a very special droid will be in town, and cosplaying is encouraged. The Golden Gate Garrison is a unit of the 501st Legion assigned to cover northern California. The main area of operations for the group is the greater San Francisco Bay area. The Legion is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to re-creating movie-accurate costumes such as stormtroopers and Darth Vader. As Bad Guys Doing Good, members of the Legion have helped raise millions of dollars for charity.

It is with pleasure that the Santa Cruz Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to participate in our educational visit to Marin and Sonoma Counties and travel on the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) train.

Arrive: 11:00 am - San Rafael, SMART station
Educational Walking Tour: 11:30 am - 12:30 pm *
Lunch: 12:30 - 1:15 pm *
Train Ride: 1:30 pm - 2:45 pm *(San Rafael to Santa Rosa Airport)
Return: Via Motor Coach 7:00 pm

* Times are tentative and may be changed based on the SMART schedule.

Cost: $59.00 per person
(includes a continental breakfast on the motor coach, walking tour of the SMART station, lunch and conversation with SMART operations executives, SMART train ticket and ride from San Rafael to Santa Rosa Airport and light refreshments and snack on the return motor coach ride)

The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) is the San Francisco Bay Area’s newest transportation option for travel, offering the first new passenger rail service in decades, through Sonoma and Marin counties. SMART’s initial 43 miles of rail corridor includes 10 stations, from the Sonoma County Airport to Downtown San Rafael. Future extensions include: Larkspur, which is scheduled to be completed in 2019; Windsor; Healdsburg; and Cloverdale. The full project will provide 70 miles of passenger rail service, connecting SMART passengers with jobs, education centers, retail hubs and housing along the Sonoma-Marin (US 101) corridor, and a bicycle-pedestrian pathway.

We will learn the technical, financial and political process that created this modern two county multi-city jurisdiction transportation system.

As Santa Cruz County explores a variety of transportation options for our region’s future, the Chamber wishes to provide an educational and informational experience for the business community and public policy leaders in Santa Cruz. The Chamber is not endorsing one transportation option over another, but is providing the story behind the evolution of new passenger rail service in Marin and Sonoma Counties. We learn by exploring how other communities take on infrastructure elements that benefit their residents. What better way to understand transportation alternative than to experience it first hand?

Revitalize river habitat in the heart of Santa Cruz at Coastal Watershed Council's monthly volunteer event. As a volunteer you will enhance the ecosystem that surrounds the San Lorenzo River by planting beneficial native plants and removing invasive plant competitors. You will explore and learn about the riparian, or riverside, ecosystem. Join us in making the San Lorenzo River ecosystem better for the fish, birds and bugs, and for our community. Shakespeare to Go has been taking Shakespeare on the road since 1984, with a mission to connect with local youth and give back to the community. A Shakespeare to Go team—comprised of a faculty director and student actors, designers, stage managers, assistant directors, and dramaturgs from UC Santa Cruz—work innovatively to bring a Shakespeare play to life by making it relevant to younger audiences. While the new script is shortened, the richness of Shakespeare’s language always remains. Each year, a UCSC Theater Arts faculty member creates a 50-minute adaptation of a Shakespeare play, and assembles a cast comprised of UCSC students. This year (Spring 2018), Shakespeare to Go will be performing the classic tragedy Romeo and Juliet, adapted and directed by UCSC Theater Arts faculty member Patty Gallagher.
