The Santa Cruz Area Chamber of Commerce is continuing it's Leadership Series - "Leadership in a Changing World” - where we will bring in local and regional leaders to discuss how they manage up as leaders in the business, community and at home. Leaders who are mentors to their business colleagues, friends or associates and family.

Keynote Speakers:

Marlene Tromp - UCSC Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor: Marlene Tromp is responsible for managing the daily operations of UC Santa Cruz. She works closely with Chancellor George Blumenthal and is the administration's primary liaison with the Academic Senate. Tromp's priorities include engaging faculty in the creation of a vibrant academic and research vision, bringing an entrepreneurial spirit to the creation of new sources of revenue, providing focused leadership to support student academic needs, and growing the commitment to serving first-generation college students and a diverse student population. Tromp joined UC Santa Cruz in 2017 after serving as vice provost for Arizona State University’s West Campus and dean of ASU’s New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Florida, M.A. in English from the University of Wyoming, and B.A. in English from Creighton University in Nebraska.

Shellye Archambeau - Former CEO of MetricStream: MetricStream, a Silicon Valley-based, governance, risk, compliance and quality Software Company that enables corporations to improve their business operations through better risk management across the enterprise, Shellye built the company into a global market leader with over 1,200 employees serving customers around the world. MetricStream has been recognized for growth and innovation over the years and was named in the top 10 of the “Deloitte Technology Fast 50” and named a global leader in GRC by leading independent analyst firms for the last 9 years.

Shellye has over 25 years of experience in technology leading organizations focused on business to business as well as business to consumer. She is a recognized expert in marketing and co-authored, Marketing That Works: How Entrepreneurial Marketing Can Add Sustainable Profits to Any Sized Company. She has held EVP of Sales and Chief Marketing Officer roles for two public companies and as President of Blockbuster.com, launched the entertainment retailer’s first online presence.

She was named the second most influential African American in IT by Business Insider in 2013. In 2015, she was ranked one of the “100 Most Influential Business Leaders in America” by Newsmax and that same year received the NCWIT Symons Innovator Award from The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT). She currently serves on the boards of Verizon and Nordstrom.

Shellye is also a sought after speaker on governance, risk and compliance as well as marketing and entrepreneurship. She guest lectures at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and The Wharton School of Business. She has been featured or referenced in major publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Business Week and The Financial Times.

In her spare time Shellye enjoys exercising, the Arts, entertaining and cooking.

Panel Speakers:

Jim Frawley - Santa Cruz Fire Department Fire Chief: Jim Frawley serves as the Fire Chief for the Santa Cruz Fire Department. He oversees 65 full-time personnel and 95 part-time/seasonal lifeguards. The Santa Cruz Fire Department protects the city proper and the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) with a combined population of 80,730 living in 19 square miles. With four Fire Engines and a Ladder Truck, the Santa Cruz Fire Department responds to over 9,000 emergency incidents ranging from fires and emergency medical calls to technical cliff and water rescues. Chief Frawley is proud to serve with all of the conscientious and dedicated firefighters of the Santa Cruz Fire Department.

In addition to 28 years of fire service experience, Chief Frawley has a Bachelor of Science degree from U.C.L.A. in Kinesiology and is a certified Chief Officer and Fire Marshal. Jim has received extensive training in Fire Command, Organizational Leadership, Emergency Management, and Counterterrorism. Jim is also a member of several professional organizations. He has served in executive leadership roles for both the Santa Cruz County Fire Chiefs’ Association and the Los Angeles Area Fire Chiefs’ Association.

Laura Marcus - CEO Dientes Community Dental Care: Laura rejoined Dientes Community Dental Care as Executive Director in May 2011, after serving as the Vice President of risk at Nonprofits Insurance Alliance Group in Santa Cruz. A graduate of Leadership Santa Cruz County, she earned a bachelor’s degree from San Jose State University and is a fellow of Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, Leadership Institute for Nonprofit Executives. She is currently pursuing her Master’s in Public Health at UC Berkeley. Ms. Marcus started her career in nonprofits as part of an HIV/AIDS prevention project in South Africa, became Executive Director of the Human Care Alliance, then joined Dientes in 2004 and served as Executive Director from 2006-2008. She serves on the boards of the Health Improvement Partnership and the United Way of Santa Cruz County. She is a 2013 graduate of Focus Agriculture and a 2015 recipient of the Community Assessment Project Community Hero Award.

Susan True - CEO of Community Foundation: Susan loves connecting community resources to our county’s most persistent and difficult problems. She is an accomplished social impact leader. She excels in bringing communities together to improve lives through effective philanthropy, results oriented programs and simple kindness and nurturing for the place she calls home. Born in Minneapolis, she has been a Santa Cruz County resident since 1991. Susan holds a BA in Community Studies from UCSC and Master’s from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Susan has been the Executive Director at CASA of Santa Cruz County and First 5 Santa Cruz County. Most recently, she led the programs for the Kenneth Rainin Foundation in Oakland. She was appointed as CEO of the Community Foundation in October, 2017. She is the proud mother of a 27 year old son who is a sixth grade teacher in Monterey. Susan is a baker with a big sweet tooth. She is also a nature lover and you can find her hiking, running and mountain biking whenever she gets the chance.

Paul A. Carlson – Associate General Counsel of Plantronics: Paul joined Plantronics in Santa Cruz in October 2016 as Associate General Counsel and is responsible for a variety of legal areas and strategic initiatives. Before joining Plantronics, he was Deputy General Counsel at Seagate Technology where he led a team of lawyers and legal staff for Seagate’s cloud systems group. Paul previously worked at a large San Francisco law firm in the corporate law and emerging companies group, and then founded and ran his own technology law practice. He went to law school at UC Hastings in San Francisco and holds a BA in History from UC Berkeley. As a resident of Aptos and Santa Cruz County for the past 12 years, Paul is active in local organizations. He currently is a member of the Finance Committee for Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz County. Paul enjoys training for and participating in triathlons as a member of the Santa Cruz Triathlon Association in his free time.

The California Highway Patrol is offering a traffic safety program for seniors. The Age Well, Drive Smart Program is designed to provide mature drivers with the keys to driving safer and driving longer. Topics will include: How to tune up driving skills, refreshing knowledge of the rules of the road, learning about normal, age related physical changes and how to adjust them, when it may be time to limit or stop driving. Revitalize river habitat in the heart of Santa Cruz at Coastal Watershed Council's monthly volunteer event. As a volunteer you will enhance the ecosystem that surrounds the San Lorenzo River by planting beneficial native plants and removing invasive plant competitors. The Green Golly Project presents Life in the MIDDLE ages: a musical memoire about becoming an adult! Barbara Siesel, flutist, producer, educator and entrepreneur, has pioneered the promotion of new music, new technology and the music of women composers through her work as artistic director of Art Culture & Technology and founder and artistic director of The Storm King Music Festival. In 2004 Barbara decided to turn her attention to promoting classical music and music education for children and co-founded the Parents Choice Gold/Family Choice award winning The Green Golly Project. Author Talk with Dana Mackenzie, local author and co-author of The Book of Why: The New Science of Cause and Effect About The Book of Why: For thirty years, co-author, Judea Pearl, has been working to restore the lost language of causation to science. All statistics students, and most scientists, have heard the adage: “Correlation is not causation.” While there is nothing wrong with this mantra on the surface, it has been used to justify a virtual taboo against speaking about causation. Pearl’s work has shattered this taboo and placed the study of cause and effect on a firm scientific basis. It enables us to answer—or at least to discuss!—important questions like “Does smoking cause cancer?” or “Was this heat wave caused by global warming?” The Book of Why will replace “Of course we can’t answer that question” with “Of course we can!”

Imagine yourself at Wilder Ranch in the early part of the 20th century and help plant the heirloom vegetable garden as it would have been circa 1900. Observe composting demonstrations, gardening information and participate in garden crafts. Find out how wool is processed from “sheep to shawl” in a sheep shearing demonstration at 10:30 a.m. Craft activities and games are from 11:00 am to 3:00 p.m. The event is held on the grounds of the Wilder Ranch Cultural Preserve. The park is located 2 miles north of Santa Cruz on the coast side of Highway 1 at 1401 Coast Road Santa Cruz, CA 95060. Event is free; day-use parking is $10. This event is appropriate for all ages.
