Join us this afternoon to make something creative or make a new discovery! We are partnering with the Santa Cruz Children’s Museum of Discovery (inside the Capitola Mall) to offer this weekly program through the fall. We will be in their Tinkerlab room. The program is free, and most suitable for 6-12 year olds. Parents will need to remain available throughout the program, and will be helping children under 8. We provide materials to explore their creativity, build things, make art and make discoveries. Usually they will be able to take their creations home. Sometimes we will be reusing the equipment, and they will be building something for that day only.

The 5th Annual SLV Chili Cook off is a fun, family friendly and festive event for all! Tastings of 14 great chilis cooked on site will culminate in prizes awarded by a panel of judges. Get a jump start on NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in this 2- hour plotter/pantser writing workshop. Bring your laptop and your library card. Check out three library books in the genre that you want to write. After you study the sales pitch for these published novels, use your laptop or notebook to free write as you interview your main character, brainstorm ideas for the plot, and write an elevator pitch to guide you as you write your novel day by day in November. Developmental editor Anastasia Suen has written and edited books for children, teens, and adults and mentored writers around the globe in her online workshops. This interactive workshop for adults and teens is 2 hours in length.

Writer and historian Gregory Hinton will present a a dynamic lecture with vintage posters and photographs illuminating the remarkable legacy of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody - frontiersman, scout and world famous showman. Hinton's talk will underscore Cody's deep ties to the Golden State. From 1877 through 1916 Cody's bond with California was strong including statewide tours in multiple cities stretching from Oakland to San Diego. Buffalo Bill visited Santa Cruz in 1910, 1914 and 1915. This program is offered courtesy of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West (BBCW) in Cody, Wyoming.

Brass Over Bridges is a Brass Quintet comprised of performers and educators. Two of its members - Matt Ebisuzaki (trumpet) and Esther Armendariz (trombone) - are principal players with the Santa Cruz Symphony. The other members of the ensemble - Margarite Waddell (horn), Ari Micich (trumpet), and Lucas Jensen (trombone) - have also performed with the Santa Cruz Symphony. In honor of Veteran's Day, this recital will feature American composers such as Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, Samuel Barber, Michael Tilson Thomas, and others. This is a great opportunity to experience the wide range of sounds and styles possible with brass instruments.

Please let your members know that the Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony will perform their Fall 2018 Concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 18, at the UCSC Music Recital Hall. We can’t think of a better way to spend a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon -- listening to music by Bizet, Schubert, Elgar, and Vaughan Williams, performed by our talented young musicians, ages 12 to 20. In particular, children will be inspired to see other kids their age performing at such a high level. No one will be disappointed! Founded in 1966, the Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony is made up of students from throughout Santa Cruz County who study and excel at their chosen instruments, from violin to cello, flute to trumpet, harp to percussion. Our mission is to foster a lifelong appreciation for classical music in the youth of Santa Cruz County, with an emphasis on the beauty and value of the experience of playing and performing this music with others. Music director and conductor Nathaniel Berman is one of those charismatic young conductors who knows how to work with young people and bring out the best in their musical abilities. The Fall Concert features 13-year-old solo-violinist Xander Lee in a virtuoso piece called “Czardas” with the full orchestra. The concert also includes the world premiere of a commissioned piece for Korean instruments and orchestra by South Korean composer Sarang Kim. Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished Symphony) will bring a smile to the faces of most in the audience, who will recognize the beautiful melody in the first movement. My personal favorite on the program is the emotionally powerful “Nimrod,” from Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar. Admission to the concert is free for students up to age 18. Adults pay $15, seniors $10, older students just $5. Charles Dickens just wants to talk about his book, A Christmas Carol, but what happens when Scrooge, Tiny Tim, Mrs. Catherine Dickens, and the Ghost of Christmas Present show up? Chaos, confusion, conflict, and complaints, just like a normal holiday gathering. Willing Suspension Armchair Theater and the Dickens Project (UCSC) present an original piece written by JoAnna Rottke and directed by Karen Schamberg. Readers will be; Brian Spencer, Frank Widman, Martha Rabin, Susan Forrest and Jim Schultz. JoAnna Rottke spent her best years as Assistant Director of the Dickens Project, a research program at UCSC devoted to the life and works of Charles Dickens. She knows more about Dickens than she’d like to admit. This event is free, but donations are most welcome and appreciated. There will be refreshments as well as time at the end to ask questions and interact with the author, director and readers.
