The State’s inability to manage itself effectively has profound impacts on California business. Join us next Tuesday for a presentation by former Secretary of State Bruce McPherson on two propositions to reform California political structure. Created by a bi-partisan coalition, California Forward, has developed these voter initiatives that would (1) modify the state’s budget approval process to insure appropriate reserves and simplify the budget adoption process, and (2) protect local tax dollars collected by schools and local governments from raids by state government in lean times.
California Forward is a group of government and business leaders, initially led by Leon Panetta and Thomas McKernan, formed to address problems of arcane state governmental structures. Funded by a broad coalition and led by principals from both the Republican and Democratic parties, its mission is to improve the quality of life for all Californians by creating more responsive, representative and cost-effective government.
This session is part of a series of three Breakfast Briefings on proposed California reforms. A second session on structural reforms of state taxes will be presented by Santa Cruz County treasurer and former speaker Pro Tem of the State Assembly, Fred Keeley, December 9. A third session in January will feature a speaker from “Repair California”, a proposal of the Bay Area Business Roundtable for a State Constitutional Convention.
This month’s Breakfast Briefing, Tuesday, November 17, will be from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at the Chamber meeting room, 611 Ocean St., Suite 1. It will include a continental breakfast. Fee is $15 for members, $25 for non-members. Register at www.SantaCruzChamber.org. Attendance is limit to 40.
