Cruzin Courses

Cruzin' Courses' love affair with downtown will continue in its fourth rendition of the Women's Progressive Dinner on October 22, 2009. This annual fall outing will again stroll Pacific Avenue and environs, visiting three of Santa Cruz's finest restaurants - each offering a delectable dinner course - window shopping along the way, with a stop at Dell Williams for a very special trunk-sale show.
Downtown Santa Cruz possesses a remarkable urban environment for a small city, with some nationally-recognized locally-owned retailers like the Sock Shop and Shoe Company and Bookshop Santa Cruz, as well as some multi-generational local shopping institutions like Dell Williams, Palace Arts, Zoccoli's Delicatessen and Marini's.
But it is downtown's long tradition of unique restaurants that are the lynchpin of the Cruzin' Courses experience. This year we'll again assemble at the Museum of Art and History and make stops at Malabar, Clouds, and Owald. As always, these fine restaurants are preparing special treats for participants.
Cruzin' Courses has become an annual celebration of women socializing together in downtown Santa Cruz. I'm not sure that we ever had to prove that we could throw a great party, but the evidence is in... we can! Each year this event has been better than the last. What a marvelous time we have promoting commerce on this beautiful garden mall.
Of course at the core of Cruzin' Courses is your commitment to contribute to our community. We will again make a donation to the Museum of Art & History at the McPherson Center and, perhaps more importantly, we will again support the education of a deserving young woman through the Women in Business scholarship program with a special $1,000 scholarship on behalf of Cruzin' Courses. This has been a heart-warming experience identifying local students who have successfully continued their education in a business area, in part because of your generosity.
We will support this through the generous donation of a $2,000 pendant, donated by Dell Williams, which will be the grand prize in a raffle as well as "annieglass 13", a round platinum ringed platter donated by annieglass. One of the sixty-five Cruzin' Courses participants will be the lucky winner of this gorgeous gold and diamond pendant or the beautiful platinum platter.
In addition, this year we will make a donation to IMAGINE POSITIVE CHANGE, a new downtown program to address issues related to impoverished people on the streets of Santa Cruz. This program will create alternatives to giving money to panhandlers. On-the-street receptacles will encourage contribution to a fund to be administered by outreach social workers, providing them with cash to help the neediest with meals, housing, health care and other resources.
Your participation is a tangible extension of Cruzin' Courses' long-term commitment to attracting women and families to downtown for shopping, recreation, fine cuisine, art, and community. We are dedicated to giving you a great experience that will encourage you and your friends to frequent the commercial heart of our community.
We hope you will join the party on the evening of October 22 for this 4th annual Cruzin' Courses. The committee and I, with the dedicated support of the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce, know you will have a wonderful evening.
Please come stroll with us,   Cathy Schlumbrecht
