North Coast Orthodontics is locally owned and operated by Dr. Brian J. Schabel and Dr. Vivian H. Chan - a husband and wife team specializing exclusively in orthodontics and Invisalign® for children, teens, and adults. Together, they emphasize evidence-based orthodontic techniques with an emphasis on early detection and prevention and conservative, non-extraction treatment. Dr. Schabel and Dr. Chan’s research interests include smile and facial esthetics and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and has resulted in numerous scientific papers in international orthodontic journals.
Dr. Schabel grew up in Capitola and graduated from Harbor High School. He completed his doctor of dental surgery (DDS) degree at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Chan was born and raised in Canada and received her DDS from New York University (NYU). Their paths crossed during their three-year orthodontic residency program at the internationally renowned University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Although their new state-of-the-art facility, located at the former World Savings/Wachovia Bank building at 1830 41st Avenue in Capitola, opened this May, this orthodontic practice has been in Santa Cruz since 1966, when Dr. Robert E. Matlack opened at 550 Water Street. Since taking over the office in 2006, Dr. Schabel and Dr. Chan have introduced digital radiography, a hospital grade sterilization center, full computerized charting, and a seamless paperless office. Along with the rest of their valued team of professionals, North Coast Orthodontics embodies a close-knit family environment that is friendly and patient-centered. With the upcoming arrival of Drs. Schabel and Chan’s first child in the fall, and with thousands of patients treated by our office over several generations, our “family” is constantly growing.
Dr. Schabel and Dr. Chan see a bright future in their Capitola location and will continue to embrace their role in supporting this great community through events, sponsorships and donations.
