Annual Community Recognition Dinner and Live Auction: Around the World in 122 Years

The Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce is holding its Annual Community Recognition Dinner and Live Auction event on November 4, 2011 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cocoanut Grove. Please join us in recognizing the best in our community. The theme this year is "Around the World in 122 Years" highlighting the Chamber's role in promoting Santa Cruz County businesses and organizations at home and around the world since its founding in 1889.

This premier event features a champagne and wine reception from 5:30 to 6:30 (or until the wine runs out!), a silent auction, a scrumptious buffet, and our entertaining live auction. The Awards ceremony follows, with our awards for the Santa Cruz Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Business of the Year, and Organization of the Year given to outstanding members of the Santa Cruz community. Recipients join past honorees, including century-old Santa Cruz family and business names such as Bargetto, Haber, Leask, McPherson, Ow, Swenson, and Baskin, as well as the Seaside Company, Dominican Hospital, Granite Rock, O’Neill, the Cultural Council, Goodwill, and United Way.

Last year the event sold out, with more than 300 local business and community leaders attending. The proceeds from the auction are retained and used specifically for the Chamber in its ongoing efforts to enhance economic vitality of its members and the Santa Cruz County community.

The Board of Directors of the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce has selected the following individuals and businesses as the recipients of its 2011 Community Recognition Awards:

Woman of the Year: Cathy Schlumbrecht

Schlumbrecht is a Senior Vice President for Comerica and a fundraising spark-plug for many nonprofits including the Dominican Foundation, Hartnell College Foundation, and Natividad Hospital. A long-time board member and past-president of the Chamber, Cathy founded Cruzin’ Courses, a progressive dinner in downtown Santa Cruz. She was a principal in developing both the Santa Cruz Women in Business and its equivalent in Salinas. Her reputation for seeing social need and doing something about it is well earned. Her ability to create volunteer groups that achieve goals and have fun is unrivaled and her network of people willing to join with her to do good is legendary.

Man of the Year: Michael J. Paul

Paul is the President of Goodwill Industries of Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties. He worked his way up from the maintenance department to take over the CEO position in 1986. Since that time he has administered the remarkable growth of Goodwill including expansion of its workforce development programs from 367 participants to more than 10,000 annually; its retail operations from nine stores and one distribution center to 16 stores and three distribution centers; its purchase and reinvigoration of the local school of cosmetology and the rescue of the Santa Cruz Flea Market; its acquisition and construction of a culinary arts training center at the former Ft. Ord, and the planning and construction of a new workforce center, retail store and distribution plant in Salinas. Paul is an exemplary non-governmental organization administrator recognized nationally and internationally by the Goodwill movement.

Business of the Year: Barry Swenson Builder

Recognized nationally for its successful, creative, and intelligent developments in the Silicon Valley and Santa Cruz, Barry Swenson Builder (BSB) has been a keystone in the development of Santa Cruz County since 1989. Willing to invest years of effort in creative projects – including some that do not come to fruition – BSB continues to be a force for next-generation development and inventive solutions. Using an institutional model that encourages smart risks, BSB continues to bring unique and successful solutions to local opportunities. Projects currently in process include a Co-housing "intentional community" in downtown Santa Cruz, a revitalization of Aptos Village, and the development of the Capitola Hotel in Capitola Village, among others.

Organization of the Year: Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center

Well known for its family-centered care, warm environment and medical excellence, Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center (SMSC) received the following awards in 2011: Best Places to Work in Healthcare, Best Place to Practice, Press Ganey Summit Award, and the 2011 Sutter Health President’s Award. SMSC is a key part of the local health care "safety net" working with County Health Services, local community clinics, and in 2011 was awarded the CCHI Children’s Champion Award for support of the Healthy Kids program.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Geoffrey Dunn

Dunn is the best-selling author of The Lies Of Sarah Palin as well as other books, a screen play, and hundreds of articles and stories. A documentary film maker, he has co-directed four films for public television and taught film making at UCSC. As a financial, political, and entitlement consultant, Dunn has worked on local political issues and successfully consulted with local and national land developers on projects on the Central California coast valued at more than $200 million. A founder of Santa Cruz Community Television he is a former station manager there.
