University of Hawaii President M.R.C. Greenwood, chancellor emeritus of UC Santa Cruz, will discuss what has changed since she was last here and how "The Great Recession" has affected public research universities. As president of Hawaii's sole public institution of higher education, Greenwood is leading efforts to build the state's unique, integrated higher education system - comprised of a world-renowned research campus, two diverse baccalaureate campuses, seven strong and successful community colleges, and research and education centers throughout the islands - as a revenue center and important economic driver for Hawaii.
Women in Business Scholarships are awarded at the June Women in Business Luncheon with personal introductions and recognition of each of the award winners. These scholarships are funded entirely from Women in Business Luncheon raffles and from the Cruzin’ Courses progressive dinner produced annually by Cathy Schlumbrecht, Senior Vice President at Comerica Bank, a committee of Women in Business participants, and the Santa Cruz Chamber. An internationally known researcher and nationally recognized leader in higher education, M.R.C. Greenwood became the 14th president of the University of Hawai‘i in August 2009. She unites strong belief in the exceptional caliber of the UH System with determination to develop the university’s voice as a national leader in higher education and research.
The first woman to serve as UH’s chief executive officer, Greenwood brings experience as both a campus and university system leader. She served as provost and senior vice president–academic affairs for the University of California system, focusing on long range planning, graduate and professional education, a new science and math initiative and more transparent admissions procedures. She previously served as chancellor of UC Santa Cruz during a period of great growth in academics programs, research initiatives, faculty hiring and facilities development.
A national leader on science and technology policy and an expert on higher education policy issues, Greenwood served as associate director and consultant to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and chair of the National Academies Policy and Global Affairs Division. As a member of state and national committees and councils, she has dealt with issues from writing in America’s schools and biomedical careers for women to national security and ethics of the information society. She is past-president and fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, fellow of the American Academies of Arts and Sciences, member of the Institute of Medicine/National Academy of Sciences and former member of the National Science Board. Greenwood has published extensively on education, obesity, diabetes and women’s health. The recipient of numerous scientific awards, she has been president of the Obesity Society and the American Society of Clinical Nutrition, chair of the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine and fellow of the American Society for Nutrition.
She graduated summa cum laude from Vassar College and received her PhD from The Rockefeller University. A self-described voracious and eclectic reader, she also enjoys volunteer work, hiking, sailing and being a “soccer grandma.”
