Celebrate the 25 Years of Sunshine Villa!

The event begins at 4pm, with the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony starting at 5:30pm.

You’re invited to the party! We’ll be celebrating the 25th Anniversary with our residents, their families, and the community.  We’ll be rolling out the red carpet for the mayor of Santa Cruz, city council members, and all the rest of our fabulous attendees. The event will be catered in the courtyard with live music, and will be a wonderful celebration for all residents, families, staff, and members of the Santa Cruz community we’ve been part of for 25 years.

Did you know that when our home was the old, dilapidated McCray Hotel, it inspired Hitchcock’s “Psycho”? It’s true! That’s why we will celebrate our history with a spooky Alfred Hitchcock marathon and costume party.  Follow us on Facebook to stay informed.


Sunshine Villa:
Our home was built in the 1860s for the Kittridge family, who first called it “Sunshine Villa.” Over the next decades it was leased and owned by many upstanding community members, many of whom built additions. In the 1890s, millionaire James P. Smith and his wife Susan Crooks-Smith bought the home and proceeded to outfit “Sunshine Villa” in the elegant style they were accustomed to — with rare and valuable trees, plants and furnishings from China and Japan. After the Smiths, the mansion was no longer used as a private residence. It spent several years as a rooming house, and then a bordello, before becoming the McCray Hotel. (Many of our residents remember staying in the Hotel while vacationing in Santa Cruz as children!) In 1989, the property was purchased by Michael O’Hern, a local landscape architect, who turned it into an Assisted Living Community with his mother in mind. Sunshine Villa has won several awards, including SCAA Architecture 1992, and became a Landmark in 1998.
