Community Leadership Visit: Santa Barbara

Sept 4-6th

 CLV13CLV13.2CLV13.3CLV13.4

The Chamber's Community Leadership Visits motivate local economic decision-makers to expect great things from each other, our communities, and themselves. Join us September 4-6 as we expand and refine our vision of what is possible in our CLV trip Santa Barbara, CA.

Executives from Santa Cruz's core industry segments, from UC Santa Cruz and Cabrillo College, and from local governments throughout the county will explore the strategies, investments, and policies implemented in the Santa Barbara area affecting issues of particular interest to Santa Cruzans. The CLV will study how the Santa Barbara community has addressed opportunities and challenges in their relationships with UC Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara City College. The CLV will also focus on discuss innovation and technology transfer programs will investigate the UCSB Long Range Development Plan and compare it to UCSC plans and expectations.

CLV participants will learn about seemingly intractable issues we share with Santa Barbara, especially housing and water - especially including
Santa Barbara's plans to restart their desalination plant. Santa Barbara's plans to support and encourage new hotel/motel facilities are of particular interest as is how they have successfully encourage performing and graphic arts in partnership with their college and university.

As always, the CLV is also an opportunity to build relationships with public and private principals in the community and to take a few hours to consider issues and strategies within the County from a holistic perspective. We'll "compare and contrast" discuss political dynamics and successes and failures in addressing contentious issues with principals from the Santa Barbara community.

The program content continues to be built and refined. Here are a few highlights currently in planning:

  • Housing UCSB and the County have taken some aggressive steps to address housing issues, including the creation of land-lease housing development to insure affordability of housing for new faculty and researchers as well as aggressive plans to develop on-campus student housing attractive to students.
  • Water The City of Santa Barbara is expecting to spend almost $30 million to restart the desalination plant, built and then deactivated in the 1990s.
  • Arts The City has successfully converted portions of the area between downtown and the beach into an arts-centered tourism district.
  • Lodging The Santa Barbara Convention and Visitors Bureau has organized an effort to support the development of new lodging facilities in the County.
  • UCSB Tech The UCSB Office of Technology and Industry Alliances operates the UCSB Industry Center to match industry needs with University technologies and researchers.
  • Workforce Santa Barbara City College has a successful Professional Development Studies department providing short, credit-based workplace training class, frequently delivered at employer-business' sites.

The Chamber will coordinate all arrangements including overnight hotel accommodations, transportation, meals, and program session details. The all-inclusive fee for participation in this program is $695. You are invited to be one of the business principals, local elected officials, public and education administrators, and community leaders to participate in this unique opportunity.

Modeled on the Chamber’s three recent CLVs to San Luis Obispo in 2012 and to Boulder and Fort Collins, Colorado and the homevisit to Santa Cruz, CA, the Chamber expects this trip to sell out quickly. Please make your reservation today.*
