County Economic Vitality Strategy

Vision for County-wide Action

The County has released its draft Economic Vitality Strategy for public comment. The document’s broad framework would focus effort in six areas: housing, core industry segments, emerging industry groups, infrastructure and public sector capacity, retail and commercial areas, and community promotion. Developed by the County Planning Department and its economic development manager, Barbara Mason, the strategy document will be the subject of public scrutiny and comment for 45 days. The Chamber will host a luncheon workshop to evaluate each of these plan elements June 25. Based upon the comments and observations at that meeting the Chamber will draft a detailed response to the Plan.

The Economic Vitality Strategy (EVS) envisions an initial two-year work plan. It includes building Countywide support for the vision and strategy as well as the expansion of County staff to engage in the tasks necessary for the vision to succeed. Some other key elements include:

A business licensing program for the businesses in the unincorporated areas of the County.
The development of local systems of metrics to permit measurement of success and adaptation of the plan to needs.
An array of County code modifications to make it more competitive with other counties
Development of a “One-stop” land use and development planning model
New strategies to create and sustain affordable housing
Specific strategies to improve the County’s competitiveness as a center of agriculture, health care, education, leisure and hospitality, innovative industries including technology, the arts, “lifestyle” product enterprises, and small businesses.
Improving infrastructure including broadband and transportation
Workforce and jobs development develop efforts
