In the next 18 months two new cultural centers will open in Santa Cruz. The Tannery Arts Center Studios will come online this summer with new resources and opportunities for both artists and the community. The Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center, currently under construction will connect visitors with the sanctuary’s unique coastal and marine resources. These two remarkable resources will “bookend” Santa Cruz’s main commercial corridor and create great new opportunities to expand the vision of our cultural core. Each is currently developing the elements that will create the “user experience” and developing support in the community to fulfill their mission.
This Caffeineighted session will talk about the vision for each of the projects. We'll explore how the Marine Sancturary Center will touch hundreds of thousands of visitors, school children, and residents each year, the lessons it hopes to teach, and the exhibits that a currently in development. We'll talk about the successes the Tannery Arts Center has already had in attracting a community or remarkable artists and its expectations for become a thriving center for the creation, display and distribution center the innovative work of our community. Bonnie Lipscomb, the Director of the Santa Cruz County Economic Development and Redevelopment will also discuss how these two projects fit into the larger vision of continuing to grow the creative and cultural engines that both characterize our community and stimulate our economy.
Speakers include: George Newell, Project Director of the Tannery Arts Center. George is the former administrative officer of both Santa Cruz County and Santa Clara County, a former president of the Cultural Council, and a driving force in the creation and realization of the Tannery Arts Center project. Dawn Hayes is the Education and Outreach Coordinator for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. She is reponsible for developing and managing the education and public outrach of the Sanctuaries regional visitor centers. Her twenty years of education experience include development and implementation of marine science education program for the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Catalina Island Marine Institute. Bonnie Lipscomb is the Director of the City of Santa Cruz Economic Development and Redevelopment Agency. Redevelopment agency was was principally responsible for attracting the Marine Sanctuary Center to Santa Cruz and obtaining the grants and investments that made construction of these two facilities possible.
Santa Cruz Women in Business hosts the Caffeineighted small-meeting networking series the first Thursday of each month. Caffeineighted is designed to create a more intimate atmosphere and an opportunity for teaching and learning.
Limited to 40 participants, the session also includes introductions and conversation. A light breakfast is served. The cost is $15 for SC Chamber members and $25 for non-members.
