Featuring the Zaina Apron Made By Conflict Survivors in D.R. Congo

Nourish Some Hope in the World!

Rising International, a non-profit organization that helps the poorest mothers in the world rise out of poverty by selling their handmade products, is hosting a special Fair Trade Mother’s Day Sale Event. Supporters of fairly traded products can find mother’s day gifts that help mothers all over the world. Offerings include jewelry, home décor and fashion accessories all hand made by impoverished mothers in over 20 countries.

In honor of the mothers struggling to live where the U.N. declared, “The worst place on the planet to be a woman” Rising International is highlighting its Zaina apron as the perfect gift for mom. Made exclusively for Rising International, these colorful aprons are made by gender-based violence survivors in D.R. Congo. Aprons are $45.00 each. Every apron purchased provides trauma therapy for the survivor and sends a child to school for one month.

Zaina apron supporters also have the special opportunity to participate in the Nourishing Hope campaign.   If you purchase a Zaina apron by May 19th you can send a photo of you wearing your apron, or your mom wearing her new apron, to the artisans themselves in D.R. Congo. “Knowing that an American woman is wearing a product that I handmade here in Buakavu, DRC makes me smile and feel important" said Zaina, the apron’s namesake.

Every year, 400,000 women are raped in D.R. Congo, that's 1152 every day, or four rapes every five minutes. The region is rich in minerals, including gold and key minerals used in electronics production. Armed groups are a part of the supply chain of these minerals, and they are the main perpetrators of these horrific crimes.
