Lori Butterworth leads from the heart. From the day in 1998 that she learned that a friend’s five-year-old son, Jacob, had been diagnosed with leukemia she has been on a mission. First her mission was to create programming to provide support to families of children with cancer. Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services became a nationally recognized program including a $100,000 grant and three featured appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
Her Jacob’s Heart experiences highlighted a tragic glitch in healthcare policy that had forced families to chose between treatment and palliative care services for their children. Lori left Jacob’s Heart to co-found with Devon Dabbs, the Children’s Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition whose work over eight years resulted in landmark legislation which created a new program for critically ill children in California and removed restrictions to hospice for children in federal healthcare reform.
The mission continued to drive her to transfer her vision of compassion and engagement to a new generation of leaders. The goal of her current project is to ignite the power of young people to create a more compassionate world through meaningful community service and strong leadership. Through a partnership with the Santa Cruz-based Boomerang Project and local school leadership programs Link Crew and WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) Lori is passing on her own positive, life-affirming experiences while providing support and guidance to young people about "living life on purpose." Lori will tell some inspiring stories and talk about how ideas become nonprofits.
Doors open at 11:00 for early networking and a photo op with SANTA! Proceeds from the Santa shoot will be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank. Also, be sure to bring a can of food to help those with less.
Raffle: Proceeds from the Raffle will be split between the Women in Business Scholarship and the Boomerang Project.
Cost is $35 for SC Chamber members and $50 for non-members. Reservations are necessary and space sells out quickly for this annual event.
