Dr. Terrie Williams is a professor of biology at the University of California Santa Cruz, and has been studying large mammals for over 30 years.  She obtained her Ph.D.  in environmental and exercise physiology from Rutgers University and completed her post-doctoral studies at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the research department of the San Diego Zoological Society.

She was director of the Valdez sea otter rescue center following the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, and co-founder of the Center for Ocean Health at Long Marine Lab.

Her research expeditions have taken her around the world to study the survival strategies of Weddell seals in Antarctica, Steller sea lions, sea otters, and killer whales in Alaska, as well as cheetahs, lions and elephants in Africa.

Her primary question is how do large  animals survive in a rapidly changing world?  Recognizing that the key to survival for both humans and animals is food, she and her colleagues have used miniaturized instruments carried by wild animals to record the hunting strategies of both marine and terrestrial predators.  With her team, she is working with aquariums, zoological parks, research scientists and wild animals across the globe to ensure healthy environments for both people and wildlife.

"What is a Whale Worth in Santa Cruz"

We're not just talking about what a whale is worth to local "whale-huggers" but to the residents and businesses of Santa Cruz and the Monterey Bay. We'll not just talk about whales but also about other marine life and the "economic value" of a broad range of species. And we're not just talking about local impacts but about national and international economics and decisions that affect the long-term well-being of people around the world. But, frankly... and notwithstanding these global economic and social impacts... the question we'll consider at the WiB Luncheon on June 10 is, "What is a whale worth to you?"
Dr. Terrie WilliamsDr. Terrie Williams, UCSC Professor of Environmental and Exercise Physiology, will talk about the Economics of Endangered Species. Terrie is a physiologist who has studied the characteristics and extraordinary capacities of a broad range of animals. She has compared them to humans and asked the question, "What can humans learn from them that will enable us to live longer and perform better?"

The luncheon will also feature an expanded networking opportunity between 11:30 and 11:55. WiB committee members will facilitate a 'talk around' conversation prior to sitting down for lunch. Check in will begin at 11:15 for those interested in participating.

The Luncheon will also include award of the four WiB scholarships for 2010 including 2 Cruzin' Course Cathy Schlumbrecht Scholarships and two WiB Luncheon Scholarships. The committee received exceptional applications this year and is thrilled to introduce the four winners.

Join us at the Elks Club, 150 Jewell Street, Santa Cruz. Cost is $35 for SC Chamber members and $50 for non-members.
