About the Vista Center
Vista Center empowers individuals who are blind and visually impaired to embrace life to the fullest.
Founded in 1979 by interested citizens in Santa Cruz as Santa Cruz Resource Center for the Blind, the name was changed to Doran Center for the Blind and Visually iImpaired and later to Vista Center Santa Cruz for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
Today we are part of Vista Center, the premier resource for individuals with vision loss in San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties. Serving more than 1900 clients and families each year, Vista Center helps clients reach their highest potential through programs that promote independence and improve quality of life.
Vista Center is the only non-profit agency in Santa Cruz County dedicated to serving the special needs of people who are blind and visually impaired, and has been providing a wide variety of critical services for the past 22 years. These include programs that take place at the Vista Center, as well as outreach programs in the homes of the clients and in the community. While the Center serves individuals of all ages, over 95% of our clients are over the age of 45, and have vision loss due to age-related illness.
To expand the services offered by Doran Center and to operate with a more efficient business model, in 2003 Doran Center partnered with Peninsula Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Palo Alto. The success of this partnership resulted in changing the name of both organizations to Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in 2005. The focus of Vista Center-Santa Cruz continues to be service to the blind and visually impaired community of Santa Cruz County.
