Woman of the Year: Hilary Bryant

Hilary Bryant brings the can-do confidence of an All-American athlete to community building. This energy is manifest in her work as a Realtor and broker associate with Karon Properties as well as her remarkable achievements with local organizations and projects. Her leadership on three projects will result in more than $100,000 in contributions to local nonprofit organizations over the past 12 months.

In January 2009 the Santa Cruz City Council, faced with an unprecedented reduction in revenues, was forced to cutoff funding to many City services and projects including the Beach Flats Community Center. The centerpiece of efforts to improve and enrich this neighborhood, the Community Center has provided a family cooperative preschool, after school tutoring, neighborhood safety, literacy and a variety of youth engagement programs for more than a decade.

Motivated by the importance of this project to the community as well as the compelling stories of families and children served by the center, Hilary agreed to attend the first meeting of an advisory board to address these funding needs. There, she volunteered to organize two major fundraising events in January and April. With her leadership the advisory board raised more than $40,000 in four months to keep the center open. The Center used this time to develop a long-term solution in partnership with Community Bridges... who wisely asked Hilary to serve on their board of directors where she continues to support the Community Center and other Community Bridges programs.

What makes this effort all the more remarkable is that Hilary was already in the second year of chairing the Sunrise Rotary Bicycle Ride (Jon and Ken’s Most Excellent Adventure) that had raised more than $40,000 in 2008, with a similar target for 2009.

Perhaps under the premise that good things comes in threes, this summer Hilary added a project on short notice to her portfolio. In less than ten weeks she co-chaired the “Raising Hope by Raising a House” project for the Children’s Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition. Using the Pixar movie “Up” as a concept and the Bethke Union Street residence remodeling project as a catalyst, the project “raised” more than $20,000 for this countywide nonprofit service children suffering from life-threatening illnesses.
Hilary is also a Commissioner for the City of Santa Cruz, Parks and Recreation Commission, a past-president of the Sunrise Rotary Club, a member of the Santa Cruz Locally Owned Business Alliance, a new board member of Habitat for Humanity Santa Cruz County.

Hilary is a 1994 graduate of UCSC and gets that All-American confidence from being a two-time collegiate All-American water polo star. She continues to be a real estate sales performance leader and is a co-owner of Westside Animal Hospital with her husband, David J. Shuman, D.V.M. Hilary and David have two children and Hilary surfs and competes as a triathlete.
