In eight years, Zach Davis and Kendra Baker opened three businesses serving local and sustainable food, putting 120 people to work and successfully navigating their expansion through shifting economic times. Davis, 41, and Baker, 39, proprietors of The Penny Ice Creamery, The Picnic Basket and Assembly, were honored by state Sen. Bill Monning, D-Carmel, as the “Small Business of the Year” in his district, which includes Santa Cruz County. The pair, operating under the name “The Glass Jar,” was recognized along with small business owners from around California at an awards luncheon at the Sacramento Convention Center.
