In celebration of National Public Works Week the City of Santa Cruz is offering free trolley tours of its Recycling Center and Wastewater Treatment Facility from Monday, May 21, through Thursday, May 24. The first tours depart at 12 noon each day with additional tours departing throughout the afternoons. All tours are family-friendly and board at the southwest corner of Cedar and Lincoln streets. The community is also invited to celebrate National Public Works Week at the Bike Share ribbon-cutting on Tuesday, May 22, from 12:15-12:45 p.m. at the City Hall Bike Share station, 809 Center Street. Trolley tours of the Recycling Center will travel up the coast to the Resource Recovery Facility where passengers will see what happens to the 40 tons of material placed into blue recycle bins each day and learn about the complex recycling process. Recycling Center tours are 90 minutes long and depart Monday at 12 noon, Tuesday and Thursday at 2 p.m. and Wednesday at 12 noon and 1:30 p.m. Trolley passengers touring the award-winning Wastewater Treatment Facility will witness the quality-of-life service that naturally processes 7 million gallons of wastewater daily. They will also see the brand new ocean-themed mural by Santa Cruz artist Elijah Pfotenhauer that spans the plant’s long driveway with heights up to 24 feet. These tours are 60 minutes long and depart Monday at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday at 12 noon and 1 p.m., and Wednesday at 3 p.m. Mayor David Terrazas will officiate at the Tuesday lunch-hour launch of the new Bike Share program — a partnership between the City and Jump Bikes providing 250 electric on-demand bicycles for use by Santa Cruz residents and visitors within Santa Cruz city limits. The many Bike Share station locations are outlined on the City website along with payment options and details of how to register to begin renting: www.cityofsantacruz.com/bikeshare. The City of Santa Cruz heartily welcomes community members to participate in National Public Works Week Bike Share and trolley tour festivities.
