Eight students from Santa Cruz elementary and middle schools were recognized as winners of the annual Santa Cruz Recycles! poster contest in a City of Santa Cruz ceremony on Oct. 3. Their winning artwork was unveiled on the sides of City recycling and refuse trucks and on downtown big-belly solar compactor trash bins where it will be displayed over the next year. The 2017 Santa Cruz Recycles! winning truck artwork was submitted by three Mission Hill Middle School students: “Recycle,” created by Laulette when she was in seventh grade; “Recycle,” created by Katherine when she was in eighth grade; and “Keep Santa Cruz Green,” created by Julia when she was in eighth grade. The fourth winning truck design is “Santa Cruz Recycles,” created by Olivia when she was in fifth grade at DeLaveaga Elementary School. The 2017 Santa Cruz Recycles! winning big-belly bin artwork was submitted by three Mission Hill Middle School students: “Feed Me Trash,” created by Alden when he was in eighth grade; “Throw Away Your Trash,” created by Audrey when she was in sixth grade; and “Don’t Pollute Litter Hurts,” created by Jessica when she was in eighth grade. The fourth winning big-belly design is “Keep Santa Cruz Clean,” created by Sophia when she was in fourth grade at Holy Cross School. Each young artist was awarded a prize pack in a reusable City of Santa Cruz canvas tote bag. The annual Santa Cruz Recycles! contest gives local students in grades K-12 a chance to creatively express their understanding of community recycling and waste reduction issues. Their colorful artwork helps to reinforce the City’s waste reduction and recycling messages at the well-travelled big-belly bin downtown locations and as the recycling and refuse trucks make their City of Santa Cruz neighborhood rounds.
