Branciforte Creek Bike/Ped Bridge Project and ‘Go Santa Cruz’ Celebration Set for Sept. 28 The City of Santa Cruz invites the community to celebrate both the launch of Go Santa Cruz and the ribbon-cutting for the Branciforte Creek Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge and Multi-Use Trail Project on Thursday, Sept. 28, 12 noon to 12:45 p.m. The event takes place at the north end of the new bridge at the southern end of San Lorenzo Park. The location can be accessed via the San Lorenzo Riverwalk or Dakota Avenue. “The Branciforte Creek Bike Ped Bridge Project will help to increase walking and biking in Santa Cruz which supports the goals of our new Go Santa Cruz initiative,” said Mayor Cynthia Chase. “Santa Cruz is a national leader in reducing single-occupant car trips by supporting and promoting other means of travel, and we are excited to build on our success through the new project and Go Santa Cruz.” Go Santa Cruz is a central part of Santa Cruz’s ongoing effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and play an active role in addressing the issue of climate change. The program promotes numerous transportation options within the City of Santa Cruz and encourages residents to try biking, walking, carpooling and transit for their daily trips. Go Santa Cruz includes the City’s ongoing work to expand bike and pedestrian facilities including the new Branciforte Creek Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge and Multi-Use Trail Project. Go Santa Cruz also provides education and encouragement, increases transportation options through programs like Zipcar and Bike Share, and leverages partnerships with other transportation agencies. The Branciforte Creek Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge and Multi-Use Trail Project, which opened to the public on Sept. 1, serves a wide spectrum of active transportation users. The project includes a bike and pedestrian bridge and multi-use path from San Lorenzo Park over Branciforte Creek and under the Soquel Avenue Bridge, completing the gap in the 5-mile Riverwalk system that runs north-south through the center of Santa Cruz. The $1.8 million in state grant funds that paid for most of the project contribute to more than $18 million in competitive grants the City has achieved since 2011 for projects to improve biking and walking. Mayor Cynthia Chase will lead the Branciforte Creek Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge and Multi-Use Trail Project ribbon-cutting ceremony that also includes Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission Executive Director George Dondero, former City of Santa Cruz mayor Bruce Van Allen and City of Santa Cruz Assistant Public Works Director/City Engineer Chris Schneiter. The launch of Go Santa Cruz will include a sneak preview of the City’s new Bike Share program scheduled to roll out in March 2018.
