Remember the year 1966, and the Loving Spoonful hit, “Summer in the City?” This song brings back fond memories of my summer time youth — in Lake Tahoe down by the water, swimming and enjoying the melodic sounds that come with a hot summer day, laughter of teenagers hanging on the rocks at Sand Harbor, the splashing sound made when hitting the cold waters of Lake Tahoe as you jumped from a granite rock perched above the lake, the smell of 1960 suntan lotion and the wafting smell of the beach side barbecue. In the summer time you don’t have a worry in the world. Today, while the scene is quite different here in our beach town, summer is still that fun time where every opportunity to enjoy our beaches and the outdoor day time and night time actives takes priority in our busy work life. The work days will be there, and we’ll continue our normal work schedule despite the deadlines and projects on your desk, at your place of business. And yes, work still calls for your attention — but somehow and for no other reason — summer time is the best time for family and friends. Yesterday, we celebrated the annual tradition of summer solstice — the longest day of the year. It is a feeling that you’re never too young or too old to enjoy a summer day at the beach and cooler ocean breeze at night. Summer time kicks off with Wednesday night’s Capitola Summer Twilight Concerts; free movies on the Beach (last night’s viewing of the “Lost Boys of Summer” is a Santa Cruz classic), the Cabrillo Summer Stage Musicals, and free Friday night Bands on the Beach. We are fortunate to have these family friendly places where the sounds of music fill the air. Santa Cruz businesses take on a new look during the summer months. There are summer sales, the outdoor cafes feel more energized, and our bustling wineries and brew pubs come to life as the gloom of winter months and cold rainy season fade away. Yes, it's summer time in the Beach City, even when the fog holds tightly to the coastline — we march to a different drum in the summer. Of course we still have a lot of issues that need attention — all interdependent upon an economic climate that stays strong and the collaborative relationship between the public, private and non-profit sector to tackle those issues one at a time. Soon the days of summer time fun, July 4th parades and BBQs and other Santa Cruz traditions — like the Wharf to Wharf will be memories. But for this very moment— it is summer time in the beach city — take time to enjoy it with family, friends and neighbors. It’s your time to shine in the summer time of Santa Cruz.
