Five local elementary and middle school students received awards in the annual Santa Cruz Recycles! poster contest on Wednesday, Sept 28. Their winning artwork was unveiled at the City Corporation Yard on the sides of City of Santa Cruz recycling trucks where it will be displayed over the next year. The 2016 Santa Cruz Recycles! winners include four students from Mission Hill Middle School: “Don’t Pollute Our Ocean” submitted by Grace when she was in eighth grade; “Seal and Sunset” submitted by Jade when she was in seventh grade and Mary when she was in eighth grade; and “Raccoon” submitted by Emily when she was in eighth grade. The fifth winner was “Heart World” submitted by Rachel when she was in fifth grade at DeLaveaga Elementary School. Each artist received a prize pack in a reusable City of Santa Cruz canvas tote bag during an award ceremony at the City Corporate Yard. The annual Santa Cruz Recycles! contest gives local students in grades K-12 a chance to creatively express their ideas about recycling. This year’s winners were chosen from about 100 submissions. Their colorful artwork helps to reinforce the city’s recycling messages as the trucks make their neighborhood rounds throughout the year. Additionally, recognition was given to four students who submitted anti-litter artwork for the City’s 10 “big-belly” trash containers. These designs will soon be seen at busy downtown street corners: “Sea Otter” submitted by Bessie when she was in seventh grade at Mission Hill Middle School; “Talking Trash Can” submitted by Milana when she was in seventh grade at Mission Hill Middle School; “Keep Santa Cruz Clean” submitted by Samantha when she was in sixth grade at Mission Hill Middle School; and “Yes, Yes- No, No” submitted by Haisley when she was a kindergartner at West Lake Elementary School.
