Endorsements by elected representatives is one measure of this support. National and state office holders representing the County who support the measure include U.S. Rep. Sam Farr, State Senator Bill Monning, and State Assembly members Luis Alejo and Mark Stone have all endorsed the measure. Local governments including the County and all four cities have also supported the measure; in fact only there has been only one abstention and one vote cast against the endorsement of the measure in the four jurisdictions. In endorsing the measure Senator Monning said, “Moving around Santa Cruz County is getting harder every year. No matter how you travel, Measure D will make it easier to get from one place to another. Whether you bike, walk, drive on Highway 1, ride the bus or want to see the best use of the rail corridor for the future, Measure D will make things easier for you and your family.” Measure D Key Investments. The direct and indirect costs to business include shrinking of retail market areas, delays and uncertainty in travel times of workers, customers, and suppliers, reductions in the quality of life and reductions in workforce performance, increased land and housing costs, and increased direct costs related to travel time among many others. The capital investments in streets and roads and transportation alternatives are achievable ONLY through a local-option sales tax. The residents of Santa Cruz County are among the 15% of California’s population the does not have such a local tax. Measure D also reflects one of the most environmentally sustainable local transportation improvement plans in California. The measure provides millions of dollars more for safer bike routes and protects vital transit services to reduce reliance on automobiles. Options for safe biking are limited, cut-through traffic threatens neighborhood safety and there aren’t enough sidewalks and safe crossings for pedestrians. Our traffic congestion is so bad that critical police, fire and ambulance response time is often lost on crowded local roadways. Measure D can improve the outcomes for those in need of 9-1-1 emergency services. Cuts in federal and state funding have significantly reduced funding for transportation improvements. Measure D is the only option to address these issues. Funds raised by Measure D cannot be taken by the state or federal governments. In fact, Measure D finally makes it possible for Santa Cruz County to take advantage of essential matching funds that are available from the state and federal governments, something not possible without Measure D.
