SANTA CRUZ WORLD ARTS FESTIVAL FAMILY DAYS RETURN TO PUBLIC LIBRARIES WITH FREE, FAMILY-FRIENDLY WORKSHOPS The workshops will be held in partnership with Tannery World Dance & Cultural Center AUG. 31, 2016—SANTA CRUZ, CA— The Santa Cruz Public Libraries (SCPL), a network of 10 neighborhood library branches throughout Santa Cruz County, today announced a partnership with the Tannery Word Dance + Cultural Center to bring the Santa Cruz World Arts Festival to families and children through Free Festival Family Days, a series of workshops at the library. The four Free Festival Family Days at Santa Cruz Public Library branches will provide introductions to baile folklórico, East Indian dance, Haitian folkloric dance, and Capoeira leading up to the Santa Cruz World Arts Festival at the Tannery World Dance + Cultural Center, October 8th and 9th. The partnership to expand the Festival’s reach in making world music, art, dance, and culture accessible to families throughout the county began last year in 2015. “Everybody had such a great time dancing and learning from last year’s artists. We are lucky to have this wonderful partnership that fosters a love for the arts and bridges cultures” said Susan Nemitz, Library Director. Four Free Festival Family Days workshops will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on the following dates: --Baile Folklórico with Malena Vega, Sept. 10 at the Aptos Library: Explore basic folklórico skills of calentamiento (body warm-ups), técnica (footwork), rhythmic patterns and vocabulary. Learn a fun choreography, as well as a piece of regional history and culture through music and dance. The Aptos Branch is located at 7695 Soquel Dr., Aptos. --Odissi – East Indian Dance with Revital Carroll, Sept. 17 at the Downtown Library: Become a temple dancer for a day. Odissi is a devotional dance form originating in the temples of ancient India. Sculptured poses, fluid grace, and impeccable rhythm characterize this vibrant art form. The Downtown Branch is located at 224 Church St., Santa Cruz. --Haitian Folkloric Dance with S. Merriman-Roberts, Sept. 24 at the Scotts Valley Library: Experience the world of Haitian Folklore through rhythm, songs, and dance. The Scotts Valley Branch is located at 251 Kings Village Rd., Scotts Valley. --Capoeira: Raízes do Brasil (Roots of Brazil), Oct. 1 at the Capitola Library: Play your way to strength, coordination and flexibility while singing in Portuguese. Capoeira blends martial arts, music, dance, culture and camaraderie. Circle up! Join the roda and play capoeira in this fun and fantastic workshop for kids of all ages. The Capitola Branch is located at 2005 Wharf Rd., Capitola.
