Representative Sam Farr, Charles Eadie, Teresa Thomae, The Santa Cruz Warriors, Calliope Waterworks, and Santa Cruz Shakespeare To Be Recognized By Santa Cruz Chamber at November 5 Awards Gala The Santa Cruz Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that it will honor the following individuals, businesses and organization for their achievements and contributions to the people and communities of Santa Cruz County. The public is invited to attend the Recognition Gala November 5 honoring them. Man of the Year - Charles Eadie, founder and principal of Eadie Consultants. Charlie has been a stalwart in community planning throughout Santa Cruz County for thirty years. He has held principal positions with Hamilton Swift & Associates, UC Santa Cruz Planning, and the City of Watsonville Planning. Notably he was the lead staff for Vision Santa Cruz, the City’s earthquake recovery task force. He is also a former chair and, for 13 years, a member of the Board of Directors of the Santa Cruz Area Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year - Teresa Thomae, Director of the Santa Cruz Small Business Development Center at Cabrillo College. Under Teresa’s direction the SBDC at Cabrillo has been regionally and nationally recognized for excellence in the development of small businesses and leadership in the delivery of services for local entrepreneurs. Teresa has been the figurative “midwife” of many hundreds of Santa Cruz County businesses as well as events such as last spring’s Small Business Summit. She served two terms on the Chamber’s Board of Directors as well as numerous other boards and committees. Business of the Year - Santa Cruz Warriors, NBA development league franchise. Four years ago the Golden State Warriors initiated the development of the Warriors. In collaboration with the City of Santa Cruz, they undertook the improbable task of building an arena in twelve months… as well as a fan base and a team. Their remarkable investment has resulted in a dedicated constituency, some remarkable basketball, and the development of a generous local partner and benefactor for many other organizations in the community. Entrepreneur of the Year - Calliope Waterworks and its co-founders Keri Waters, Joel Boutros, Carroll Wainwright, Ph.D., and Hilary Bryant. Utilizing sophisticated new technology Calliope has created an affordable tool for water users to measure household water use. Their system provides residential and commercial customers the opportunity to identify waste and reduce water use at minimal cost. The company has developed international connections and a reputation for excellence in strategic decision-making. Organization of the Year - Santa Cruz Shakespeare may be the most remarkable arts story of the last decade --- in a community full of extraordinary artistic successes. As the curtains were being drawn on decades of summer theater at UCSC, a dedicated band of theater lovers raised more than a million dollars, negotiated a complex agreement for space with the City, developed that site as an outdoor theater in a matter of months, and produced one of the most polished and engaging Shakespeare programs in years. Lifetime Achievement Award - Sam Farr has represented most of Santa Cruz County and much of the Monterey Bay Area in Congress for the past 24 years. His local accomplishments as a Congressman stretch from the development of the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary to an array of federal investments in County infrastructure. His background in the Peace Corps and service as Monterey County Supervisor and as the district’s representative in the California State Assembly have been reflected in a practical approach to governance. He has been instrumental in addressing both national issues such as federal appropriations policies as well as local issues such as adjustments to the region’s Medicare reimbursement rates. Perhaps of greatest value has been his steady, moderating voice in Congress for reasoned and civilized discourse and principled decision-making. Since its founding in 1889 the Santa Cruz Area Chamber of Commerce has celebrated the people and organizations that have created and sustained our community. The Chamber invites the community to join us November 5, from 5:30 to 10:00 PM at the Cocoanut Grove to celebrate the accomplishments of these community leaders.
