Chicks in the City, Hens in the Hood Master Gardener Candice McLaren to Presents Free Workshop on Raising Chickens at Home June 22, 2016—SANTA CRUZ, CA—The Santa Cruz Public Library System (SCPL), a network of 10 neighborhood library branches throughout Santa Cruz County, today announced a free presentation by Master Gardener Candice McLaren about the joys of raising chickens at home. The workshop, titled Chicks in the City, Hens in the Hood covers how to select the best breed for you and your family, the beautiful options there are for your birds and eggs, and if raising chicks or rescuing from Animal Services is right for you. Find out how to check your city ordinances, get great ideas about how to design and place a chicken coop and how to manage it without raising the ire of your neighbors. According to Library Director Susan Nemitz, “Suburban farming, community agriculture, and organic and sustainable food sources are clearly important topics in Santa Cruz County. Connecting people with practical programs like this can really have an effect on people’s ability to make those goals a reality.” Candice McLaren is a member of the UC Master Gardeners of the Monterey Bay. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Scotts Valley Library. Chicks in the City, Hens in the Hood Saturday July 2 • 11:00am – 12:00pm Scotts Valley Library • 251 Kings Village Rd.
