Santa Cruz Recognizes the Contributions of Public Works Employees Contact: Janice Bisgaard, Community Relations Specialist (831) 420-5166 SANTA CRUZ, May 11, 2016 — Mayor Cynthia Mathews has declared May 15-21 as National Public Works Week in Santa Cruz. She presented a proclamation recognizing “the substantial contributions which public works employees make every day to our health, safety, comfort, and quality of life” to Public Works Director Mark Dettle at the May 10 City Council meeting. Highlights of Public Works contributions to the City of Santa Cruz over the last year include: The award-winning Wharf Intersection Roundabout which has reduced traffic congestion at the intersection of Pacific Avenue, Beach Street and the Municipal Wharf. The Westlake Neighborhood Pedestrian Safety Project which has created a safe and well-connected pedestrian-friendly system with improvements to reduce motor vehicle speeds. The San Lorenzo River Parkway Phase II Project which has enhanced the scenic and recreational value of the San Lorenzo River on the west levee between Laurel Street Extension and Water Street Bridge. The Ocean Street Adaptive Traffic Signal Control Project which improves the operation of Ocean Street corridor and crossing arterials by reducing delays, idle time, and greenhouse gas emissions. The San Lorenzo River Trestle Bridge Connecting Ramp which provides safe passage for dozens of pedestrians and cyclists daily over the San Lorenzo River south levee. "Public Works Always There" is the American Public Works Association’s 2016 poster theme, showcasing the pervasiveness of public works and how the men and women of the profession are always there and always ready.
