40+ Years of Volunteering Capitola, CA – March 7, 2016 – With gratitude, Bay Federal Credit Union would like to acknowledge Richard Mills, retired San Lorenzo Valley High School teacher, for more than four decades of dedication and volunteerism on the Credit Union’s Supervisory Committee, which oversees regulatory audits. The Air National Guard veteran originally from upstate New York has watched the Credit Union grow from $30 million in assets to $750 million in assets, and he has seen a small teacher’s credit union transform into a diverse financial institution spanning three counties. “Richard’s background in auditing and education make him a great fit for the Supervisory Committee,” said Carrie Birkhofer, President and CEO of Bay Federal Credit Union. “We are truly privileged to have him devote so much time and energy to our organization over the years.” Mr. Mills opened his Credit Union account in 1971, when he was fresh from earning his credential at Fresno State and teaching students to type on IBM Selectric typewriters at SLV High School. Before long, a fellow educator encouraged him to put his auditing background of working for the Comptroller of Currency to use, and he started volunteering on the Supervisory Committee. While he has now been retired from teaching for nearly 20 years, Mr. Mills plans to continue his oversight of the Credit Union into the foreseeable future. “I’ve really enjoyed doing it, because it does give you contact with professional people and the community,” Mr. Mills said. “It’s quite an experience, because when you go to the conferences and meetings, you really learn a lot.” About Bay Federal Credit Union Bay Federal is a full-service, not-for-profit financial institution that serves more than 60,000 members and 1,000 local businesses throughout Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey counties. With more than $750 million in assets, Bay Federal Credit Union is the largest member-owned financial institution in Santa Cruz County, serving its members and the community since 1957. Since 2002, 100% of all employees have given their own money and volunteered for numerous local schools, nonprofit organizations, and community events.
